SJSU golf leads MW tournament

Stanford baseball flirts with no- hitter in 4- 0 win over Cal

With Regan De Guzman leading three Spartans in the top- 10, San Jose State moved into a first- place tie at the Mountain West women’s golf championsh­ip on Tuesday

The third and final round of the event is Wednesday at the Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage.

SJSU tied for the best round of the day with an eight- over 296 to move into a tie with San Diego State after beginning the round five strokes off the lead. De Guzman shot a one- under 71 to move into a tie for fifth. Megan Osland is tied for seventh and Elizabeth Schultz is ninth.

Cal’s Marthe Wold is n 10th and Stanford’s Laren Kim tied for 12th heading into the final round of the Pac- 12 Championsh­ips in Boulder, Colorado.

Stanford is tied for 7th in the team standings, 14 shots behind Oregon and UCLA. Cal is 10th.

College baseball

Stanford’s no- hit bid was broken up with one out in the ninth inning, but the Cardinal defeated Cal 4- 0 in a non- conference game. After Chris Castellano­s walked one and hit a batter in seven innings, Gabe Cramer retired the first four batters he faced until Devin Pearson collected an infield single off Cramer’s glove. Cal ( 23- 14) added one more hit before Cramer ended the game with a strikeout. Drew Jackson scored twice for Stanford ( 17- 21).

San Jose State’s Joe n Stefanki’s second RBI of the game tied the score in the top of the ninth, but UC Davis rallied in Fifth- year senior fullback Patrick Skov is leaving Stanford for Georgia Tech. the bottom of the frame to hand a 6- 5 non- conference loss to the Spartans ( 10- 31)

Steve Berman homered n and drove in three runs, but Santa Clara ( 1623) lost 10- 6 to Cal Poly in a non- conference game.

Football

Fullback Patrick Skov announced he will leave Stanford and play his final season at Georgia Tech. Skov is the fifth player with eligibilit­y remaining to leave the Cardinal this offseason, following cornerback Wayne Lyons, offensive lineman Kevin Reihner, running back Kelsey Young and quarterbac­k Evan Crower.

All five are expected to take advantage of the NCAA’s graduate transfer rule, which allows players to compete immediatel­y for their new school if they have received a degree. Crower, Young ( bound for Boise State) and Reihner ( Penn State) were projected backups in 2015. Lyons, who started seven games last season is headed to Michigan.

SJSU’s Nichole Schultz was named Mountain West Player of the Week .
