SCU’s Atanga denied 6th year

SJSU golf 3rd at MW; Stanford finishes 7th, Cal 10th at Pac- 12s

Santa Clara forward Yannick Atanga, who suffered a season- ending knee injury in the first game of the 2014- 15 season, has been denied a sixth- year of eligibilit­y by the NCAA, the school announced Wednesday.

Atanga, who ranks fifth in school history in blocked shots, will graduate this spring with a double degree in political science and French, and pursue a profession­al basketball career.

Atanga played in 103 games for the Broncos, 41 as a starter.

Women’s golf

Megan Osland finished tied for fourth to help San Jose State finish third at the Mountain West women’s golf championsh­ips at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage.

SJSU opened the day tied for first with San Diego State, but finished 10 shots behind the Aztecs. Osland shot a two- under 70 to tie for fourth at one- over 217. Regan De Guzman finished tied for sixth, My Leander tied for 16th and Elizabeth Schultz tied for 19th.

Lauren Kim shot a n final- round 67 to place seventh, and No. 17 Stanford was seventh overall at the Pac- 12 Conference Championsh­ips at Boulder ( Colorado) Country Club.

Cal freshman Marthe Wold finished ninth, and the Bears were 10th overall.

Men’s tennis

Saint Mary’s and Santa Clara saw their seasons end in the first round of the West Coast Conference championsh­ips in San Diego.

Arthur Weber and Thomas Alexander Hunt won at No. 1 doubles for the Gaels in a 4- 1 loss to BYU.

SCU lost 4- 0 to Gonzaga.

Women’s soccer

Former Santa Clara star Tina Estrada was named Saint Mary’s associate head coach on Travis Clarke’s staff. Estrada, a Fremont native and Washington High product, was fourtime All- West Coast Conference at SCU in a career that ended in 2007.

Stanford goalkeeper n Jane Campbell and defender Andi Sullivan and Santa Clara midfielder Dani Weatherhol­t have been invited to training camp for the U. S. under- 23 women’s national team that starts Sunday.

San Jose Giants

Chase Johnson and two relievers combined on a five- hitter in a 7- 0 win over Inland Empire at Municipal Stadium. Ryder Jones extended his hitting streak to 10 games in the win.

Santa CruzWarrio­rs

Santa Cruz resumes its pursuit of its first NBA Developmen­t League title on Thursday at Fort Wayne. The Mad Ants swept the Warriors 2- 0 last year. The Warriors have reached the finals in all three years of their existence and will host. Game 2 ( and Game 3 if needed). ESPNU is televising the series.

College baseball

Saint Mary’s outfielder/ pitcher Anthony Gonsolin is one of 36 players named to the watch list for the 2015 John Olerud Two- Way Player of the Year Award.

College basketball

Cal junior point guard Tyrone Wallace will announce whether he will return to school or enter the NBA draft in a new conference on campus Thursday.
