Calvin Peete, who taught himself how to play golf at 24 and became the most successful black player on the PGA Tour before the arrival of Tiger Woods, died Wednesday morning, the PGA Tour said. He was 71.

The tour did not have a cause of death. Murray Brothers Funeral Home in Atlanta confirmed it was handling the arrangements but did not release additional information.

Peete won 12 times on the PGA Tour, mainly on the strength of his uncanny accuracy off the tee. Peete led the PGA Tour in driving accuracy for 10 straight years starting in 1981, and he captured the Vardon Trophy over Jack Nicklaus in 1984. He also played on two Ryder Cup teams.

Maverick McNealy n tied a Stanford record with a 61 in the final round of the Pac- 12 men’s golf championships, earning medalist honors and lifting the Cardinal to its second straight league title. Stanford overcame a nine- shot deficit heading into the final round at Palouse Ridge Golf Club in Pullman, Washington, to win by 14 strokes over Oregon. McNealy finished at 18- under 262, 10 shots clear of second- place Aaron Wise of Oregon. Cal’s KK Limbhasut ( 280) tied for sixth, and the Bears finished seventh.

Tiger Woods has n added the Greenbrier Classic in West Virginia to his summer schedule. The tournament starts July 2.
