Resounding win opens U.S. team victory tour

Ex-Stanford star Press scores 3 goals against Costa Rica

-

Former Stanford star Christen Press scored three goals Sunday to power the United States to an 8-0 exhibition romp over Costa Rica in its first game since winning the Women’s World Cup in Canada last month.

The game marked the opening of a victory tour by the Americans and was played before a crowd of 44,028 at Heinz Field — the largest to see a soccer game in Pittsburgh.

Meghan Klingenberg grew up in Pittsburgh and rewarded her hometown fans with a goal. Heather O’Reilly added two goals, with the other scores coming from Whitney Engen and ex-Santa Clara player Julie Johnston.

Press was among six starters Sunday who did not start in the World Cup final. Cal product Alex Morgan did not play, having undergone minor knee surgery after the World Cup. Goalkeeper Hope Solo and forward Abby Wambach entered in the second half. Christen Press (23) controls the ball during the U.S. team’s 8-0 win over Costa Rica.

Golf

Brooke Henderson won the Cambia Portland Classic by eight strokes to become the third-youngest champion in LPGA Tour history.

The Canadian closed with a 3-under 69 at Columbia Edgewater in Oregon to finish at 21-under 267. Henderson is 17 years, 11 months, 6 days.

Henderson’s eight-stroke win is the largest margin of victory on the LPGA Tour since Jiyah Shin won the 2012 Women’s British Open by nine shots.

Hannah O’Sullivan, 17, n won the U.S. Women’s Amateur, beating Sierra Brooks 3 and 2 in the 36-hole final at Portland (Oregon) Golf Club.

Tennis

Swiss teen Belinda Bencic won the Rogers Cup in Toronto, following her upset of Serena Williams with a 76 (5), 6-7 (4), 3-0 victory over an ailing Simona Halep.

Halep was hampered by a left leg injury, cramps and heat exhaustion and stopped in the third set.

nAndy Murray beat topranked Novak Djokovic 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 in the Rogers Cup in Montreal for his fourth tournament victory of the year.

Miscellany

Sam Mikulak had little trouble picking up his third straight U.S. gymnastics title, overcoming an early misstep on the high bar to dominate a crowded field that will give the Americans a deep roster heading into the world championships in October in Scotland.

Mikulak posted a tworound score of 183.650 in Indianapolis, a whopping 4.35 points ahead of Donnell Whittenburg in the gymnastics equivalent of a blowout. Chris Brooks took third.

Arkansas standout n running back Jonathan Williams will miss “an extended period of time” with a left foot injury, coach Bret Bielema said. Bielema said surgery would be required — with Williams expected to make a complete recovery. He rushed for 1,190 yards last season.

Kia Nurse scored 20 n points, and Canada beat Cuba 82-66 in the goldmedal game of the FIBA Americas women’s basketball championship in Edmonton, Alberta, to clinch a berth in the 2016 Olympics.
