Stanford stages rally, beats Arkansas on basket in last seconds

Cal arrived in Las Vegas undefeated and ranked 14th in the nation.

The Golden Bears left with back-to-back losses and in jeopardy of falling out of the Top 25.

One night after losing to San Diego State in the semifinals of the Las Vegas Invitation­al, the Bears lost to Richmond 94-90 on Friday in the consolatio­n game.

Freshman forward Jaylen Brown’s career-high 27 points weren’t enough for the Bears (4-2), who used a 22-6 run to rally from a 15-point second-half deficit and led 81-77 with a little less than 4 minutes left. The Spiders closed on 17-9 run to pull off the upset.

“I think the talent is there, we all have to be on the same page. Offensivel­y I think we’ll get it going and we’ll figure it out,” Brown said.

Terry Allen scored a career-high 34 points and matched his career best with 13 rebounds to lead Richmond (4-2).

“It was a good test from both squads, but I think in a month from now, we’ll look back on this and really appreciate this experience,” Brown said.

Tyrone Wallace added 15 points and Ivan Rabb had 13 for Cal.

Stanford 69, Arkansas 66: The Cardinal erased a 17-point deficit with 6:39 to play, scoring 21 of the game’s final 22 points to defeat the Razorbacks (2-3) for third place in the NIT Season Tip-Off in Brooklyn.

Marcus Allen’s layup with 2.6 seconds left was the deciding basket.

Rosco Allen finished with 25 points as Stanford (3-3) snapped a three-game losing streak.

San Jose State 76, San

Diego 67: Frank Rogers scored 18 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the Spartans (2-3) past the Toreros (0-5) in the Great Alaska Shootout’s consolatio­n semifinals in Anchorage.

Evansville 69, Santa Clara 57: Jared Brownridge scored 19 points, but the Broncos lost to the Purple Aces (4-1) in a consolatio­n

game in the Wooden Legacy in Fullerton to remain winless at 0-7.

Gonzaga 73, Connecticu­t 70: Kyle Wiltjer scored 17 points, Eric McClellan added 15 and the Bulldogs (4-1) held off the No. 18 Huskies (4-2) in the Battle 4 Atlantis third-place game in Paradise Island, Bahamas.

Michigan State 77, Boise State 67: Denzel Valentine scored a career-high 32 points and the No. 3 Spartans (6-0) beat the scrappy Broncos (3-3) in the semifinals of the Wooden Legacy in Fullerton.

Women

Stanford 82, Missouri State 65: Lili Thompson scored 26 points, with five 3-pointers, and the No. 13 Cardinal rolled on Day 1 of the Gulf Coast Showcase in Estero, Florida.

Stanford (4-1), coming off a stunning loss to Santa Clara, was 15 of 33 on 3-point attempts overall. Briana Roberson scored 18 points and Karlie Samuelson added 15 points.

Texas A&M 75, Cal 58: Freshman Kristine Anigwe’s first collegiate doubledoub­le wasn’t enough to lift the No. 16 Bears past the No. 10 Aggies (5-0) at the South Point Shootout in Las Vegas.

Anigwe scored a careerhigh 23 points and added 12 rebounds in the first loss of the season for Cal (4-1).

Saint Mary’s 83, Fresno State 81: Lauren Nicholson scored 25 points and Sydney Raggio added 21 points and 12 rebounds to lead the host Gaels (5-0) over the Bulldogs (1-4) in overtime. Nicholson put SMC up for good with a 17-foot jumper with two seconds remaining in overtime.

Santa Clara 69, Cal Poly 63: Morgan McGwire led all scorers with a career-high 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the Broncos beat the Mustangs (2-3) in the Cal Poly/ShareSLO Holiday Tournament.

Lori Parkinson had 16 points and 10 rebounds for Santa Clara (3-2).

Washington State 95, San Jose State 80: Freshman Borislava Hristova scored 30 points to lead the host Cougars (5-0) over the Spartans. Dezz Ramos led SJSU (1-3) with 21 points.
