STORYLINES: A victory would assure the Bears of their first winning season since 2011. … A Cal win would possibly secure a berth in the Cactus Bowl on Jan. 2 in Tempe, Arizona. … Cal’s victory over FCS foe Grambling State has been accepted by the NCAA, and the Bears are bowl eligible for the first time since 2011. … Arizona State has won its past two games to become bowl eligible but has played a Pac-12-low three true road games all season — they played Texas A&M in Houston — and hasn’t won away from home since beating UCLA on Oct. 3.
INJURY UPDATE: Cal: WR Kenny Lawler (buttocks) and RB Khalfani Muhammad (foot) are probable; RB Daniel Lasco (ankle), DE Jonathan Johnson (knee), Saf Damariay Drew (knee) and Saf Griffin Piatt (collarbone) are out; Arizona State: RB Demario Richard (ankle) is probable; DB Jordan Simone (knee), WR Cameron Smith (knee), DB Armand Perry (ankle) and FB Nick Ralston (unknown) are out.
MATCHUP TO WATCH: Cal’s offensive line vs. Arizona State’s pass rush. The Sun Devils share the NCAA lead with 44 sacks — 10 more than any other Pac-12 team. Cal QB Jared Goff will try to counter with quick passes to exploit a defense that has allowed 301.6 yards per game through the air — second-worst in the conference.
STATS THAT MATTER: Goff needs just 59 passing yards to move past former Oregon State quarterback Derek Anderson (2001-04) into the No. 5 spot on the Pac-12 career list. Goff currently has 11,191 yards. … He needs 264 yards to break his own single-season school record and 290 to become the first Cal quarterback to pass for 4,000 yards in a season. … ASU linebacker Antonio Longino leads the conference with 10 sacks and 19 tackles for loss. Teammate Salamo Fiso is second in the latter category with 17.
