Santa Clara earns first win

Kratch’s double-double lifts Broncos; Stanford women win in OT

Although Santa Clara’s final game Sunday in the Wooden Legacy in Anaheim was only for seventh place, the Broncos were more than ready to notch their first victory of the season after dropping seven to start the year.

Nate Kratch posted a double-double — 12 points and 10 rebounds — and Kai Healy added 14 points as Santa Clara earned a 62-45 victory over Boston College.

“I’m proud and happy for our kids,” Broncos coach Kerry Keating said. “We’ve had a rough first month of the season, but I feel we’re getting better.”

Santa Clara (1-7), which had lost its first two games of the tournament to Arizona and Evansville, shot 44 percent (22 for 50) and out-rebounded Boston College (3-3) 39-34.

Kratch, who was 6 of 7 from the field, has recorded double-digit rebounds in three of the last four games.

“We stayed positive and had better energy today and didn’t worry about the past,” Kratch said. “We came with a workers’ mentality and focused on fundamenta­ls.”

Saint Mary’s 94, CS Bakersfiel­d 59: Emmett Naar scored 17 points to lead five Saint Mary’s players in double figures as the Gaels improved to 4-0 with a rout of the Roadrunner­s (3-2) in Moraga.

Freshman Evan Fitzner had 16 points and nine rebounds, both career highs.

USF 67, Delaware State 47: Devin Watson scored 18 points, and the Dons (42) outscored the visiting Hornets (0-7) by 22 points in the second half. Tim Derksen added 14 points.

Michigan State 77, Providence 64: Bryn Forbes scored 18 points and Deyonta Davis had six of his 12 in a game-ending spurt to help the No. 3 Spartans (7-0) rally past the Friars (6-1) in the title game of the Wooden Legacy.

Duke 85, Utah State 52: Freshman Luke Kennard scored a career-high 22 points to help the No. 6 Blue Devils (6-1) beat the visiting Aggies (4-1).

Arizona 68, Boise State 59: Allonzo Trier and Kadeem Allen scored 13points each, and the No. 11 Wildcats (6-1) beat the Broncos (3-4) for third place in the Wooden Legacy.

Women

Stanford 71, Purdue 65: Briana Roberson scored a career-high 26 points, Lili Thompson added 17, and the No. 13 Cardinal (6-1) needed overtime to beat the Boilermake­rs (5-1) in the championsh­ip game of the Gulf Coast Classic in Estero, Florida.

Roberson was 7 of 12 from the field, including 5 of 6 from beyond the arc. Erica McCall added 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Texas 64, Tennessee 53: Lashann Higgs scored 18 points, and the eighthrank­ed Longhorns (5-0) beat the No. 4 Lady Vols (5-1) to end their 27-game home winning streak.
