Stanford men win, achieve Elite Eight
Morris scores twice in second half in 3-1 win against Ohio State
U.S. national team striker Jordan Morris scored two second-half goals Sunday night in what could be his final home game to lead eighth-seeded Stanford to the Elite Eight in the NCAA men’s soccer tournament.
Morris scored in the 53rd and 78th minute as Stanford advanced with a 3-1 victory over No. 9 Ohio State (13-7-3). The Cardinals’ Corey Baird added a goal in the 88th minute.
Stanford (16-2-2) will travel to top-seeded Wake Forest (16-2-2) next weekend for a chance to reach the College Cup for the first time since 2002.
The Columbus Crew n earned only its second trip to the MLS Cup final in the 20-year history of Major League Soccer and its first since 2008, losing 1-0 to the host New York Red Bulls but advancing with a two-leg 2-1 aggregate victory. Columbus hosts the championship game Dec. 6 against the Portland Timbers, who completed a 5-3 aggregate victory earlier Sunday with a 2-2 draw at FC Dallas.
Baseball
The Detroit Tigers have reportedly reached a deal with free agent right-hander Jordan Zimmermann. The 29-year-old Zimmermann went 13-10 with a 3.66 ERA last season for the Washington Nationals. ESPN. com, citing an unidentified source, reported the financial terms at $110 million over five years.
Motor sports
Nico Rosberg completed a hat trick of victories to end the Formula One season when he won the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Rosberg won by 8.2 seconds at the Yas Marina circuit to complete Mercedes’ 12th one-two finish of the season, establishing an F1 record.
Skiing
Mikaela Shiffrin won back-to-back World Cup slalom races in Aspen, Colorado. The 20-year-old American finished Sunday’s event in 1 minute, 40.18 seconds.
CFL
Jordan Lynch scored on a 1-yard sneak with 3:22 left, and the Edmonton Eskimos rallied to beat the Ottawa Redblacks 26-20 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, for their 14th Grey Cup title.
Tennis
Andy Murray gave Britain its first Davis Cup title in 79 years when he beat Belgium’s David Goffin 6-3, 7-5, 6-3. The win gave Britain a 3-1 lead in the best-of-five series in Ghent.
Golf
Charl Schwartzel eased to a four-shot victory at the Alfred Dunhill Championship in Malelane, South Africa, to become the third South African behind Ernie Els and Retief Goosen to win 10 European Tour titles. Schwartzel finished with a 2-under 70 for a 15-under total of 273.
Hockey
The San Jose Barracuda lost to the visiting Texas Stars 3-2 at the SAP Center. Trevor Parkes and Gus Young scored for San Jose.
