Georgia’s Richt ‘mutually’ resigns

Move looks to be firing; Stanford now seventh in latest AP poll

Mark Richt stepped down as Georgia’s coach Sunday in what was called a “mutual” decision but looked like a firing.

Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity said in a statement that he met with Richt on Sunday morning “to discuss the status of our football program.” McGarity said the two “mutually agreed that he would step down as head coach and would have the opportunity to accept other duties and responsibilities at UGA following the bowl game.”

Georgia (9-3) ended its regular season with Saturday’s 13-7 win over Georgia Tech. It was clear after the game Richt had no plans to step down. He said he planned to begin recruiting “and getting prepared for the future at Georgia.”

Richt had only a short statement in the announcement released by Georgia.

“I appreciate the opportunity of serving the University as well as considering any other options that may present themselves in the future,” Richt said.

APpoll: Oklahoma moved up to No. 3 behind Clemson and Alabama, and Stanford moved up six spots to No. 7 in the new Associated Press poll.

Notre Dame dropped from fourth to ninth after losing to the Cardinal on a last-second field goal.

Clemson is No. 1 for the fourth straight week, and Alabama is No. 2.

Rutgers: The school fired coach Kyle Flood and athletic director Julie Hermann.

Flood was suspended for three games this season for making inappropriate contact with a professor regarding a player’s academics.

Iowa State: The school announced the hiring of Toledo coach Matt Campbell as the Cyclones’ new coach, saying Campbell has agreed to a six-year contract starting at $2 million for 2016.

Purdue: Coach Darrell Hazell announced that offensive coordinator John Shoop, defensive coordinator Greg Hudson and defensive tackles coach Rubin Carter will not return next season.
