REDWOOD CITY — A neighborhood was breathing easier Monday night after a man wanted in connection with the stabbing death of his girlfriend over the weekend was captured by San Mateo police, authorities confirmed.

Anthony Kirincic, 22, was arrested by police around 7:30 p.m. after he barricaded himself inside a home on Massachusetts Avenue for more than two hours, police said. Kirincic was wanted in connection with the gruesome death of his girlfriend, 34-year-old Colleen Straw, who was found stabbed at her home in the 1500 block of South B Street on Saturday afternoon.

On Monday around 5:30 p.m., San Mateo police stated they had surrounded a home on Massachusetts Avenue where detectives believed they saw Kirincic. Redwood City police helped San Mateo authorities and closed off Massachusetts at Alameda De Las Pulgas, as well as Hempstead at Maddux Drive and Maryland Street.

Neighbors were asked to shelter in place, and some were even evacuated to nearby Henry Ford Elementary School.

According to police, Straw called 911 after being stabbed about noon Saturday, but died despite efforts by responding paramedics.

Police said Kirincic had fled the home before they arrived.

About 12:30 p.m. Saturday, after receiving a tip that Kirincic’s unoccupied car was found in a San Carlos parking structure, law enforcement officials searched the Sutter Health San Carlos Urgent Care Center at 301 Industrial Road, according to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s deputies, along with other law enforcement agencies, evacuated the center, closed off nearby streets and searched the area with a SWAT team, but did not find Kirincic. Although there was no confirmation that he had a weapon, police considered him armed and dangerous because of the circumstances of the stabbing. The clinic remained closed for more than four hours.
