Sharpshoot­ing Gaels romp to 56-point victory

Dane Pineau scored 20 points and led four players in double digits as Saint Mary’s rolled over Southern Utah 9236 on Wednesday night at McKeon Pavilion.

Pineau did it with 10of-12 shooting from the field for the Gaels (8-1). He also had six rebounds and six assists. Emmett Naar added 16 points, five assists and five steals, and Calvin Hermanson and Franklin Porter had 15 points apiece.

Pineau struck six times from inside the paint in less than five minutes early in the first half, sparking a 23-9 start for the Gaels on their way to a 47-19 lead at the break.

The Gaels averaged 62.5 percent shooting from the field and made 14 of 26 (53.8 percent) from beyond the arc. James McGee led the Thunderbir­ds (3-6) with 15 points.

North Carolina 96, Tulane 72: Brice Johnson had a career-high 25 points and 10 rebounds, and the 11th-ranked Tar Heels (82) beat the visiting Green Wave (6-5). The Tar Heels won their first game without injured big man Kennedy Meeks and bounced back from a last-second loss at Texas that knocked them out of the top 10.

Arizona 92, Northern Arizona 37: Mark Tollefesen scored 19 points, Ryan Anderson had 18 points and 12 rebounds, and the No. 13 Wildcats (10-1) overwhelme­d the Lumberjack­s (2-7) in Tucson.

Arizona had a 50-14 advantage in the paint, 24 more rebounds and opened the second half with a 34-6 run to stretch the nation’s longest home win streak to 45 games.

Baylor 104, Hardin-Simmons 59: Johnathan Motley had 23 points and the No. 16 Bears (8-1) beat the Division III Cowboys (6-5) in the first regular-season game played at Fort Hood (Texas), one of the nation’s largest Army posts. The game was closed to the general public, but 1,600 free tickets were distribute­d to soldiers and their families to attend the game at Abrams Field House.

Arizona State 66, UNLV 56: Tra Holder had 19 points and nine rebounds to lead the Sun Devils (73) over the Runnin’ Rebels (8-3) in Las Vegas.

Women

South Carolina 86, Hampton 48: Alaina Coates had 22 points and 12 rebounds, and the second-ranked Gamecocks beat the visiting Lady Pirates (1-8) for their fourth straight 10-0 start. It was the second straight game South Carolina played without leading scorer A’ja Wilson, resting because of shin splints.

Texas 92, Canisius 62: Imani Boyette had 15 points and 10 rebounds to help the No. 5 Longhorns (9-0) beat the visiting Golden Griffins (6-3).
