Wildfire spreads to 1,500 acres
Hundreds of firefighters are battling a wildfire in Sonoma County that has grown to 1,500 acres, prompting dozens of evacuations, Cal Fire officials said Sunday.
The fire started shortly before 11 a.m. on Sunday off Big Geysers Road and Geysers Resort Road, but spread from 75 acres amid hot and dry weather conditions.
“The fire is moving at a moderate rate of spread and is in steep, challenging terrain with difficult access,” Cal Fire reported.
About 20 to 30 homes have been evacuated and 530 firefighters were battling the blaze, according to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office. Multiple law enforcement agencies were responding to the fire.
As of 6 p.m., firefighters had contained about 10 percent of the fire. No injuries have been reported but buildings nearby were being threatened. The cause of the fire, which is burning east of Cloverdale, is currently under investigation.
An evacuation center was opened at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church at 1402 University St. in Healdsburg.
