LSU fired coach Les Miles and offensive coordinator Cam Cameron on Sunday, and promoted defensive line coach Ed Orgeron to interim head coach.

The moves came less than 24-hours after Miles briefly watched his players celebrate what they thought was a last-second winning touchdown pass at Auburn, only to walk off the field with a loss after officials determined on video replay that time had expired before the ball was snapped.

It was the latest of several frantic finishes in which the clock management of a Miles-coached offense had come under intense scrutiny. It will go down as the last.

“Coach Miles has done a tremendous job here and he’s been a great ambassador for our University, which makes this even more difficult,” LSU athletic director Joe Alleva said in a written statement. “However, it’s apparent in evaluating the program through the first month of the season that a change has to be made.”

LSU (2-2) fell out of the Top 25 on Sunday after having been ranked No. 5 at the start of the season.

Miles, who was in his 12th season, went 114-34 at LSU, the second-most victories in school history behind Charles McClendon’s 137 victories from 1962 to 1979.

Hours after an embarrassing n 38-35 home loss to Duke, Notre Dame fired defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder. The school tweeted a news release saying VanGorder is being replaced by defensive analyst Greg Hudson. The Irish is 1-3 and allowing 33.5 points a game, which is on pace to be the most points in school history.

Wisconsin moved up n three spots to No. 8 in The Associated Press college football poll, and Stanford remained No. 7. In between: Alabama, Ohio State, Louisville, Michigan, Clemson and Houston.

Former San Jose State n coach Ron Turner was fired at Florida International after the Panthers fell to 0-4 with a 53-14 loss to Central Florida. Turner, who was 10-30 at FIU, coached one season at SJSU, going 7-4 in 1992 and leaving to become offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears.

Mylan Hicks, a member n of the Calgary Stampeders who spent training camp with the 49ers in 2015, was killed in a shooting outside a Calgary nightclub early Sunday.

Auto racing

Kevin Harvick took the lead late in the race, then held off Matt Kenseth to win the NASCAR Cup race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

The victory means Harvick will join Martin Truex Jr. — who won the first race of the Chase last week and finished seventh Sunday — when the second round of the Chase begins in two weeks at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Harvick took the lead after a restart on Lap 295 of 300. He started alongside Kenseth, who had led for 105 laps, on the front row and quickly pulled away.

Kyle Busch, who closed in on the leaders late in the race, finished third, with Brad Keselowski ending up fourth. Truex led a race-high 141 laps, but dropped several spots from second during a late restart.

MLS

Jordan Morris scored his 11th and 12th goals of his rookie season and the Seattle Sounders beat Los Angeles 4-2 to remain in seventh place, three points behind Portland for the final playoff spot.

Hockey

Tomas Tatar scored his second goal 3:43 into overtime to give Team Europe a 3-2 victory over Sweden in the World Cup of Hockey semifinals. The eight-nation European team will begin a best-of-three series against Canada on Tuesday night for the World Cup of Hockey title.

Colleges

Kristen Amrikwa and Gabriela Herrera both scored in the opening 25 minutes and the San Jose State women’s soccer team completed a sweep of its opening weekend of Mountain West play with a 3-1 win at Nevada.

San Jose State’s Marie n Klocker won the Flight A singles championship and Tamara Culibrk won the Flight D championship at the Gopher Invitational women’s tennis tournament hosted by the University of Minnesota.

Collin Morikawa tied n for ninth and the Cal men’s golf team finished eighth at the Maui Jim Invitational in Scottsdale, Arizona.
