Harry Shearer suing studio over his ‘Spinal Tap’ profits

Shearer’s suit, filed Monday in Los Angeles, says Vivendi S.A. and its subsidiary, StudioCanal, owe him money from the film, its music and its merchandise, according to CBS.

Shearer is asking for $125 million.

“The Simpsons” voice actor was the bassist of a fictional hard rock band trying to make a comeback in the 1984 mockumentary film, which was directed by Rob Reiner and co-starred Christopher Guest and Michael McKean. None of them have joined Shearer as plaintiffs in the lawsuit.

The movie was made for $2.25 million, according to the suit. It earned $4.5 million in theaters and $193,000 in re-release, according to CBS, citing comScore.

Shearer said Vivendi told him sales of the “Spinal Tap” soundtrack came to $98, and that the co-creators’ share of global merchandise sales between 1984 and 2013 totaled $81.

Vivendi declined to comment on the lawsuit to CBS.
