In a season of close calls, De La Salle found itself in another tight game through one half Friday night. But a big third quarter propelled the top-ranked Spartans to a 31-9 victory on the road over eighth-ranked California, which trailed 7-3 at halftime. Elsewhere, Pittsburg’s Montaz Thompson, back from an ankle injury, broke the school record for most career regularsea­son touchdowns, with 31, as the unbeaten Pirates cruised to a 56-7 victory over Liberty. Freedom also remained perfect, setting up a showdown next week at Pittsburg with a 48-14 win at home over Heritage.

South Bay/Peninsula

Los Gatos, which lost three of its first four games, moved another step closer to an SCVAL De Anza Division championsh­ip with a 35-6 victory over Palo Alto. But the race is not over as Wilcox bounced back from a stunning loss to Palo Alto with a 25-21 victory at home over Milpitas to stay within a game of Los Gatos. Next Friday, Los Gatos plays host to Wilcox. Half Moon Bay saw its undefeated season end Friday night with a 49-35 loss at The King’s Academy.
