Stanford hangs nine on Buffs

Cardinal 9 for 9 from floor in third-quarter rally to beat Colorado

Karlie Samuelson scored 20 points, Brittany McPhee added 18 and No. 13 Stanford made nine-straight shots in the third quarter to pull away for an 84-70 win over Colorado on Sunday.

The Cardinal (15-3, 5-1 Pac 12) trailed 42-41 and missed their first two shots of the third quarter before getting hot for a 69-60 lead. McPhee and Samuelson combined for 25 points, making those nine shots.

Stanford shot 54 percent (28 of 52) for the game, including 11 of 20 from 3-point range, with Samuelson going 5 of 7 — the eighth time in her career with at least five. The Cardinal also made 14 of 15 free throws in the second half and had just three turnovers after 11 in the first half. Five players had at least five rebounds.

After making 8 of 13 3pointers and shooting 50 percent in the first half, the Buffalos (11-6, 1-5) made just 7 of 31 in the second half, 3 of 12 from distance. Kennedy Leonard scored 22 points with seven assists. Colorado has lost three straight at home, all against ranked teams.

Utah 63, Cal 57: Malia Nawahine and Emily Potter scored 15 points apiece and the Utes held on to defeat the No. 24 Golden Bears.

Kristine Anigwe led Cal (14-4, 2-4 Pac-12), which finished 11 of 17 from the line, with 22 points, 10 rebounds and a career-high seven blocks.

The Utes (13-4, 2-4 Pac 12) led the whole way, slowly building the lead to 12 points on a layup by Nawahine with 4:30 to play. Cal then reeled off 11 straight points, closing within 58-57 on a jumper by Courtney Range with 1:47 remaining.

Utah missed two free throws but Cal committed a turnover, and Potter ended up at the foul line after grabbing an offensive rebound. She made one free throw, but the Bears came out of a timeout and had an unforced turnover that led to two Nawahine free throws for a 61-57 lead. After another Cal miss, Paige Crozon closed it with two from the line at 9.2 seconds.

UCLA 79, Oregon 63: Monique Billings scored a career-high 30 points and had 14 rebounds and six steals to lead the No. 17 Bruins (13-4, 4-2 Pac 12) past the Ducks (12-6, 2-4) for their 22nd straight home victory.

Freshman Ruthy Hebard led Oregon with a career-best 29 points.

Louisville 63, Miami 59: Mariya Moore scored 24 points to lead the No. 9 Cardinals past the No. 14 Hurricanes.

Briahanna Jackson added 11 points, and Myisha Hines

Oregon State 74, USC 60: Kolbie Orum scored 16 points on 8-of-11 shooting to help the No. 10 Beavers beat the Trojans.

North Carolina 55, Duke 52: Dominique Wilson scored 16 points, Chelsea Nelson had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and the No. 23 Wolfpack beat the No. 12 Blue Devils.

Washington 65, Arizona State 54: Kelsey Plum snapped out of an off shooting night to score 15 points in the fourth quarter and the No. 8 Huskies (18-2, 6-1 Pac-12) pulled away to beat the No. 19 Sun Devils.

Plum, the nation’s leading scorer at 31 points per game, finished with 34 to propel the Huskies to a road sweep of the Arizona schools and keep them alone in first place.

Men

USC 71, Colorado 68: Chimezie Metu scored a career-high 24 points, including a go-ahead hook shot with 29 seconds left, and the No. 25 Trojans held off the slumping Buffaloes.

Metu arched a shot over his defender moments after Xavier Johnson gave the Buffaloes a one-point lead on a 3-pointer. George King had a chance to tie it at the buzzer, but missed.
