Hu wins four as Stanford women splash by Arizona

Saint Mary’s College rugby team starts fast in triumph over Utah

Janet Hu won four times and Kassidy Cook swept the diving events to lead No. 2 Stanford women’s swimming and diving team to a 190-104 victory at No. 17 Arizona on Saturday.

Hu swept the backstroke events, and also took first in the 100-yard butterfly. She won handily in the 100 back in a time of 52.90 seconds. She completed the backstroke sweep in 1:55.34, edging out freshman teammate Allie Szekely (1:55.90). Hu finished first in the 50 fly in 52.50.

Ally Howe, Heidi Poppe, Hu and Simone Manuel finished first in the 200-medley relay in 1:39.05, and Lia Neal, Manuel, Howe and Lindsey Engel prevailed in 1:31.17 in the 200 free relay. Ella Eastin won in the 200 breast race (2:16.82) and the 200 fly (1:57.47).

Several of the swimmers earned individual victories as well. Neal was first in the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.39),

Freshman Katie Ledecky made it a perfect 5 for 5 for her collegiate career in the 500 free.

The No. 8 Stanford n men completed a perfect road trip with a 170-118 win against No. 18 Arizona.

In the 200-yard medley relay, Stanford took the early lead as Ryan Dudzinski, Matt Anderson, Andrew Liang and Sam Perry (1:28.24) claimed the top spot.

Freshmen True Sweetser (9:06.81) and Grant Shoults (9:14.86) dominated the 1,000 free.

Jimmy Yoder (1:39.70) won the 200 free ahead of Cole Cogswell (1:40.40) and Brad Zdroik (1:40.52).

The Cal women’s team n raced past Arizona State, 181-111. The Bears won 14 of 16 events, and Phoebe LaMay broke her own school record on the 1-meter springboar­d.

Cal took the day’s first two races, the 400 medley relay and the 1,000 free, behind freshman Chenoa Devine’s time of 10:06.20.

Amy Bilquist notched victories in the 100 free and 200 free. Kathleen Baker, an Olympic silver medalist in the 100-meter back, won the 100 and 200 back races, and Katie McLaughlin prevailed in the 200 butterfly and 500 free.

The No. 1 ranked n Bears (3-0) beat No. 12 Arizona State 160-130 to win their second dual meet in as many days.

Ryan Murphy provided a big lead after the backstroke leg in the 400 medley relay, and Hunter Cobleigh, Justin Lynch and Long Gutierrez kept right on rolling to a time of 3:09.67.

Rugby

Prop Kevin Sullivan scored four tries as Cal defeated Arizona, 39-12, followed by an 81-0 win over UC Santa Cruz on Witter Rugby Field.

Against the Wildcats, Sullivan scored three straight tries, with two more added by sophomore fullback Troy Lockyear and freshman Sebastian Bader.

Saint Mary’s stormed n out to a 41-5 halftime lead and beat Utah 55-12. SMC improved to 3-0 this month.

Horse racing

So Conflated, with jockey Mario Gutierrez, won the $100,450 California Derby in a time of 1:44.71 over 11⁄16 miles at Golden Gate Fields. So Conflated is trained by Doug F. O’Neill.
