Stanford prevails in finals rematch
Cardinal women’s tennis team turns back Oklahoma State
Nine months later, Stanford and Oklahoma State squared off in a highly anticipated rematch of last year’s NCAA women’s tennis championship.
Different setting. Same result. Senior Taylor Davidson shook off an early deficit to grind out a threesetter, clinching No. 5 Stanford’s 4-1 victory over No. 6 Oklahoma State on Friday night at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida, as part of the College MatchDay series. Emily Arbuthnott, Caroline Lampl and Melissa Lord also earned singles wins for the Cardinal.
Stanford (4-0) next travels to Gainesville for a match against No. 1 Florida (7-0) on Sunday.
Baseball
Santa Clara and Cal had their season openers washed out Friday. Santa Clara’s four-game series with Washington has been rescheduled for a doubleheader Saturday (first game 3 p.m. at Stephen Schott Stadium) and single games Sunday (3 p.m.) and Monday (6 p.m.).
Cal’s series with Cal Poly is scheduled to be made up as a doubleheader Saturday (first game 1:05 p.m. at Evans Diamond), and the series finale is slated for Sunday (1:05 p.m.).
Stanford lost its season opener late Thursday 1-0 at Fullerton State and resumes the series Saturday. San Jose State had its opener at UCLA postponed until Saturday. USF had its opener at renovated Benedetti Diamond suspended in the top of the seventh inning. Northern Colorado leads 5-4, and play resumes Saturday before the scheduled doubleheader.
Softball
Cal (5-1) sophomore Zoe Conley allowed three hits and one unearned run as the Bears beat Illinois 2-1 at the Mary Nutter Classic in Cathedral City. Bradie Fillmore drove both Cal runs in the second inning with a one-out single.
Host Stanford postponed n all the Nike Invitational games scheduled for Friday.
Katelyn Linford n picked up her third win in as many starts, and Chelsea Jenner drove in three runs as San Jose State split its first two games at the DiMarini Desert Classic in Las Vegas. The Spartans defeated Southern Utah 112 in five innings and lost to Hawaii 3-0.
