Add-on camera

- By Sharon L. Peters

I recently purchased a 2012 Ford Escape, which I’m quite pleased with. One feature I was hoping would be on it (but was not) was a rear-view camera. I especially missed it after I backed into a small motor scooter parked directly behind me. Do you know of any aftermarket product of this type? I have no idea where it could be installed, or if it would be a separate unit like a GPS. Is there such a device?

I’m pleased to say there are scads of options for you to check out.

In simple terms, most of them work wirelessly more or less this way: You mount a small rear view camera next to your back license plate and you get to see the image on a special mirror with screen that fits over your review mirror. Naturally, there are variations.

You might begin with an online investigation to get a little background on what’s available and how they work. You can find many options at Crutchfield.com, Carid. com, and others of that ilk. Or if you’re the type who wants to look and touch right from the get-go, and do your research by speaking with salespeople, you can visit your local auto supply retailer, as it appears that most of them carry these gizmos as well.

The prices I’ve seen range from about $60 to more than $300.

I know of no one who has installed one, but the two sales folks I spoke with said it’s important to zero in on detail and definition before you make your selection. Also know that the cleanliness of the back of the car (i.e., mud splatter, sleet, and road grime residue) all will affect just how much you’ll see.

They’re pretty easy to hook up, but if you buy one from a brick and mortar seller, they’ll generally install it, usually (though not always) for a small fee.

Any way to find out what is the small SUV with the best fuel economy?

Yes. The U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency published its 2017 Fuel Economy Guide recently. In the small SUV category, the best was the Toyota RAV4 at 32 miles per gallon.
