Retiring Stanford coach ends regular season with victory

Stanford coach Mark Marquess’ final regular season game ended the same way as his first: with a win. In its final year under Marquess, the No. 9 Cardinal won its seventh straight, 15-1, over Washington State in Pullman, Washington, on Saturday.

Stanford (40-14, 21-9 Pac-12), which enters the NCAA Regionals with 21 wins in its last 23 games, will attempt to grab a topeight national seed. Site hosts for the postseason will be unveiled on Sunday. Marquess, who is retiring at season’s end, wrapped up his 21st 40win season in his 41-year tenure.

Stanford sophomore Brandon Wulff hit a threerun home run in the first inning, and Chris Castellano­s allowed one earned run in seven innings.

Tennis

Tom Fawcett continued his impressive run at the NCAA singles championsh­ip with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Oklahoma’s Alex Ghilea in Athens, Georgia. Fawsett advances to Sunday’s semifinals against Virginia’s Thai-Son Kwiatkowsk­i.

Kwiatkowsk­i defeated fifth-seeded Christophe­r Eubanks of Georgia Tech 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.

Maegan Manasse of Cal combined with Alabama’s Maya Jansen to knock off defending champions Brooke Austin and Kourtney Keegan of Florida 7-6(3), 6-2 in the NCAA Doubles Championsh­ip to advance to Sunday’s semifinals.Manasse and Jansen will play Ohio State’s 18th-ranked duo of Francesca Di Lorenzo and Miho Kowase.

Golf

Stanford shot a 1-under 287 in the second round of the NCAA Men’s Golf Championsh­ips in Illinois. The Cardinal is tied for 16th with Alabama and North Carolina. UNLV leads the field at 14-under, and Texas’ Scottie Scheffer is the leader among individual­s at 8-under.
