Symphony Silicon Valley’s new season taps star soloists
Renowned cellist Lynn Harrell, pianists Stephen Prutsman and Jon Nakamatsu and violinist Mayuko Kamio are among the featured soloists on the 2017-18 Symphony Silicon Valley season.
The Symphony’s 16th season runs September 30, 2017, through June 3, 2018, at the California Theater in San Jose.
Seven guest conductors will lead programs: Paul Polivnick will be on the podium for Program 1 (Sept. 30-Oct. 1), leading Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7. The Overture to Wagner’s “The Flying Dutchman” and Britten’s Passacaglia and “Four Sea Interludes” from the opera “Peter Grimes” are also on the program.
Taiwanese conductor Mei-Ann Chen makes her Symphony Silicon Valley debut on Program 2 (Oct. 21-22), leading Brahms’ Symphony No. 3 and Dvorak’s Slavonic Dances. Violinist Mayuko Kamio joins the orchestra in Khachaturian’s Violin Concerto.
Program 3 (Dec. 2-3), conducted by Alasdair Neale, includes Elgar’s “Enigma” Variations, along with works by Brahms, Ginastera and Alma Deutscher.
In 2018, Harrell returns to perform Schumann’s Cello Concerto; John Nelson conducts the program (June 20-21), which also includes Schumann’s “Manfred” Overture, Haydn’s Sinfonia concertante, and Kodály’s “Dances of Galánta.”
Nakamatsu joins conductor Carlos Vieu in Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3 (March 1618.) Debussy’s “Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun,” Respighi’s “Pines of Rome” and Inocente Carreño’s “Margariteña” complete the program.
Conductor John Nelson leads the orchestra, joined by the Symphony Silicon Valley Chorale and bassbaritone Adam Lau (with additional soloists TBA), in Haydn’s masterful oratorio, “The Creation” (May 5-6.)
The season closes June 2-3 with an all-Tchaikovsky program featuring pianist Prutsman in the composer’s Piano Concerto No. 1; Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 and “Marche Slave” complete the program. Tatsuya Shimono conducts.
