Fire near Mountain Winery now 40 percent contained
Firefighters on Monday night were battling a slow-moving wildfire in the steep terrain near the Mountain Winery.
The blaze was reported about 3:10 p.m. near Mt. Eden Road and Orchard Meadow Drive in Saratoga, said Chief Fire Investigator Ryan Cronin of the Santa Clara County Fire Department.
As of about 7 p.m., the fire had burned 7 acres and was 40 percent contained, Cronin said. The flames were burning uphill away from homes and toward Mount Eden Vineyards. No injuries were reported and no structures were damaged or threatened.
Cronin said the vineyards were serving as “a great firebreak,” and 150 firefighters from Cal Fire and the Santa Clara County Fire Department were working to keep the flames from spreading to the east or west.
The Mountain Winery, a popular concert venue, is located about a mile from Mount Eden Vineyards.
Crews were aided by light winds and moderate conditions, but high-tension power lines in the area were hampering efforts to battle the blaze with retardant and water drops, Cronin said.
Mt. Eden Road residents received an erroneous alert to shelter in place just after 5 p.m., Cronin said.
“The intention was appropriate,” he said. “We wanted to keep people off the road because of all the (fire) equipment.”
