Beltran’s glove laid to rest in Astros jest

- News service reports

In his Mets heyday Carlos Beltran won three Gold Gloves in a row.

These days Beltran, now with the Astros, primarily plays designated hitter and on Monday his teammates poked some fun at the fact that Beltran hasn’t played his customary position in the outfield since May.

Prior to Houston’s game against the Mariners Astros players planted some foam tombstones in the outfield and held a mock funeral for Beltran’s dormant glove.

Beltran took it all in stride and even belted a two-run home run later on in the evening.

Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton took over the National League home run lead, smashing his 27th and 28th against the Phillies.

His first home run of the night ricocheted off the auxiliary scoreboard in left field, a shot reminiscent of his 2012 homer that hit that same scoreboard and knocked out a light panel. Monday’s blast traveled 441 feet in a span of just five seconds, according to Statcast.

Noah Syndergaard and Matt Harvey played catch with each other at Citi Field in the first time either had thrown a baseball since landing on the disabled list. Syndergaard, who has been out since April 30 with a torn lat, and Harvey, on the shelf since June with a scapula bone injury, made about 35 tosses each from 75 feet. No official timeline has been set for either righthander’s return, but a midto late-August return is thought to be the best-case scenario for both.
