Jeter group primed to acquire Marlins
The Miami Marlins told Major League Baseball on Friday that they intend to sign an agreement to sell the team to a group that includes former New York Yankees captain Derek Jeter, who would be a limited partner in the group led by venture capitalist Bruce Sherman.
MLB was told that owner Jeffrey Loria’s sale price will be about $1.2 billion to the group, which includes more than 10 entities.
Jeter will be in charge of baseball operations, said a person familiar with the proceedings.
MARINERS’ ACE ON DL >> The Seattle Mariners will likely be without left-handed ace James Paxton for at least three weeks because of a pectoral strain.
Paxton was put on the 10day disabled list on Friday, a day after he was pulled in the seventh inning of his start against the Angels. Paxton was optimistic it was a minor injury, but an MRI confirmed a stint on the disabled list.
Paxton was the AL pitcher of the month in July and had won seven straight starts heading into Thursday’s outing, where he got a no-decision. He is 12-3 with a 2.78 ERA in 20 starts.
CUBS’ CONTRERAS OUT >> The Chicago Cubs say catcher Willson Contreras is expected to be out four to six weeks because of a strained right hamstring.
The team put Contreras on the 10-day disabled list before Friday’s game at Arizona.
Contreras has been a major factor for the Cubs since the All-Star break, batting .311 with 10 home runs and 29 RBIs.
