Felix new leader in worlds medals

- By The Associated Press

Allyson Felix earned a second gold medal on Sunday and highlighted the overwhelming performance of the United States at the 10-day IAAF World Championships in London.

In doing so, Felix made sure she became the most decorated athlete in the history of the event, and that includes Usain Bolt.

Felix won gold in the 4x400-meter relay a day after winning the same color medal in the 4x100 relay. She also earned a bronze medal in the 400-meter race to give her 16 in her career. Bolt finished his career with 14.

“It’s an honor to run in the relay for Team USA,” said Felix, who won her first medals at the 2005 worlds in Helsinki.

In a world championship of upsets right up to the last event, Trinidad and Tobago beat the United States in the men’s 4x400, producing only a little dent in an all-powerful performance.

The Americans finished with 30 medals, 10 of them gold. That was only one short of the overall record held by East Germany.

Bolt, however, will leave London without a gold medal. Running at his last major championship this week, the Jamaican got a royal farewell from the 60,000 fans at the Olympic Stadium on Sunday as they cheered his famed “To The World” pose.

Kenya was the only other team to break into double figures with 11 medals overall.

Bolt gave Jamaica gold medals and chutzpah for a decade, but his farewell only produced a bronze in the 100 meters. Jamaica slumped to four medals this year, compared to 12 only two years ago.

ITALIAN SUPER CUP >> Alessandro Murgia scored a last-gasp winner as Lazio beat Juventus, 3-2, Sunday to win the Italian Super Cup after a wild end to the match.

Two goals from Ciro Immobile, including an opening penalty, had seemingly set Lazio on the way to a comfortable win. But Paulo Dybala netted a stunning free kick in the 85th minute and converted a penalty in the first minute of stoppage time.

The match appeared to be heading for extra time before youth academy graduate Murgia, who had come on as an 80th-minute substitute, scored the winner.

SPANISH SUPER CUP >> Cristiano Ronaldo was sent off after helping Real Madrid secure a 3-1 win at Barcelona in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup on Sunday.

Ronaldo scored to make it 2-1 in the 80th minute and earned a yellow card for taking off his shirt to flex his muscles at Camp Nou.

Ronaldo will miss Wednesday’s second leg in Madrid after being booked again just two minutes after scoring for diving in the area.

Madrid went ahead in the 50th from an own-goal by Barcelona defender Gerard Pique.

Lionel Messi equalized for Barcelona in the 77th when he converted a penalty after Luis Suarez was fouled by goalkeeper Keylor Navas.

Marco Asensio got 10man Madrid’s third goal in the 90th.

ROGERS CUP >> Alexander Zverev kept his winning streak alive with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Swiss ace Roger Federer in the Rogers Cup final in Montreal on Sunday.

The 20-year-old Zverev posted a 10th straight match victory and ended the 36-year-old Federer’s winning streak at 16. The German also tied Federer with a fifth tournament victory this year.

Zverev used some sharp groundstrokes to keep Federer from taking control early and get the only service break he needed to win the first set.

Zverev escaped a break point at 1-0 in the second set with consecutive aces, then broke Federer for a 4-3 lead and served out the match.

Federer missed a chance to tie Ivan Lendl for second place all time with 94 tournament wins.

Jimmy Connors leads with 109.

In the doubles final, fifthseeded Frenchmen PierreHugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut defeated seventhseeded Rohan Bopanna of India and Ivan Dodig of Croatia, 6-4, 3-6, 10-6.

Elina Svitolina defeated Caroline Wozniacki, 6-4, 6-0, to win the women’s title.

It was Svitolina’s fifth WTA Tour title of the season.
