Temperatures in triple digits return to the Bay Area
Mother Nature is about to bring the sizzle back to summer for much of the Bay Area.
Temperatures are expected to soar into the upper 90s and low 100s this weekend in several inland locations, the first spike of hot weather in more than three weeks, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures are expected to peak Sunday but remain very warm to hot for the remainder of August as a ridge of high pressure settles above the region.
The weather service has issued a heat advisory for South Bay, East Bay and North Bay from 11 a.m. Sunday to 9 p.m. Monday. Potential impacts include heat-related illness and increased risk of fire.
The return of scorching temperatures ends a long stretch of moderate conditions throughout the Bay Area. Livermore, which is expected to reach tripledigits this weekend, has reached 90 degrees just once since Aug. 4. On Sunday, San Jose (airport station) could reach 95 for the first time since July 16.
“It’s definitely going to be much warmer than what we’ve had recently,” said Charles Bell, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
Temperatures in some inland valley cities could reach 104 degrees Sunday, including hot spots in Contra Costa, Napa, Sonoma and Santa Clara counties, Bell said. Saturday will also be hot, with many inland valley locations hitting the upper 80s and 90s.
Temperatures ranging from the mid-70s to mid80s are expected along the coast and right on the Bay, Bell said.
There may be overnight relief as temperatures drop to the upper 50s and to low 60s, Bell said.
Forecasters are predicting very warm to hot weather for the Bay Area through the end of August and perhaps into September.
