Stanton hits 2 HRs in Marlins victory

-

Giancarlo Stanton homered twice, increasing his major league-leading total to 49, and tied a career high with five RBI, helping the Miami Marlins climb above .500 for the first time since April with an 8-6 victory over the San Diego Padres on Friday night.

Miami grabbed the lead for good on Marcell Ozuna’s three-run drive in the seventh inning. It was Ozuna’s 30th homer of the season.

Stanton has nine multihomer games this season, the most in the majors since Jose Bautista had nine with Toronto in 2010. Stanton’s homer total is the highest in the NL since Prince Fielder hit 50 for Milwaukee in 2007 — and the Marlins still have 35 games to play.

PHILLIES 7, CUBS 1 >> Rhys Hoskins hit another homer and Cesar Hernandez ripped

a three-run triple to lead Philadelphia. Hoskins has nine homers and 21 RBI in 16 games. No player in major league history has reached nine homers that quickly, according to MLB.com. MARINERS 2, YANKEES 1 (11 INNINGS) >> Yonder Alonso homered on a 100 mph fastball from demoted closer Aroldis Chapman in the 11th inning, and Seattle outpitched New York. SUSPENSIONS ANNOUNCED

>> Detroit slugger Miguel Cabrera was suspended seven games and Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez got barred four games for their actions on a fight-filled afternoon at Comerica Park. Major League Baseball handed out the penalties one day after the Yankees and Tigers got into a trio of beanballrelated clashes during Detroit’s 10-6 win. They appealed and remain eligible until the process is complete.
