Results put season into focus

The fourth Friday of the high school football season told us more than the three previous weekends combined.

It was that kind of night. From Clayton Valley Charter dominating previously unbeaten Antioch to Wilcox pounding San Benito, the forecast is starting to become more clear.

Here is what we learned:

— Clayton Valley Charter is back. After an 0-2 start, the Ugly Eagles not only squared their record at 2-2, but they also gained an inside track to one of the North Coast Section’s four Open Division spots.

Of course, Clayton Valley has to keep winning, but its schedule looks mostly favorable the rest of the way.

And given the result Friday — Clayton Valley 55, Antioch 22 — the Ugly Eagles now have a win that should give them an edge when the NCS selection committee hands out Open Division playoff bids in November.

— The East Bay Athletic League could be a three-team race — and two of the three meet Friday when California plays host to San Ramon Valley.

Here’s guessing Foothill will be cheering big time for the black and orange of California.

Without Fresno State-bound quarterback Ben Wooldridge (shoulder), Foothill was no match last week for SRV, losing 45-0.

Wooldridge returned Friday, and Foothill responded with a 4214 victory over Monte Vista.

It’s a long season in the EBAL — nine league games — but SRV will be in great shape for the championship at the one-third pole if it beats Cal.

— Wilcox entered its game against San Benito needing something good to happen.

The Chargers opened the season with losses to Monterey Trail and Valley Christian and were hosting an opponent that just defeated one of Wilcox’s league rivals, Los Gatos, the week before.

Well, give Wilcox a big check mark in the category of league championship contender.

The Chargers routed San Benito 35-0 with five rushing TDs and a dominating on defense.

They play Los Altos in a Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division opener Saturday at Levi’s Stadium.

— Milpitas was dominant in its first two games. But its level of competition (American and Berkeley) was far from elite.

The Trojans faced a better opponent Friday — Salinas, on the road — and earned a 27-0 victory.

Milpitas’ schedule will toughen Oct. 6 when Wilcox pays a visit.

— There is no doubt the Peninsula Athletic League’s Bay Division is the toughest league this season in the Central Coast Section outside of the West Catholic Athletic League.

Three teams — Half Moon Bay, Burlingame and Aragon — are still undefeated. A fourth team — Terra Nova — most likely would be unbeaten had it not had to forfeit its opener against Gunderson.

A fifth team — defending Bay champion Menlo-Atherton — just beat Los Gatos 56-41 on the road.

That followed two narrow losses at home against Bellarmine College Prep and Archbishop Mitty of the WCAL.
