Dolphins suspend AWOL linebacker Browns put Coleman on IR

-

Linebacker Lawrence Timmons was suspended indefinitely by the Miami Dolphins on Tuesday after he went AWOL on the eve of the team’s season opener.

Miami then acquired linebacker Stephone Anthony — the 31st overall pick in the 2015 draft — from the New Orleans Saints for an undisclosed 2018 draft pick.

Timmons’ agent, Drew Rosenhaus, declined to comment on the suspension except to say that Timmons wanted to rejoin the team this week. But Coach Adam Gase was angered by the disappearance of the 11th-year veteran, which occurred Saturday in Los Angeles the day before Miami’s game at the Chargers.

Timmons signed a $12 million, two-year deal with Miami in March after 10 seasons with Pittsburgh, where he made the Pro Bowl in 2014.

Panthers put Olsen on IR

Greg Olsen will miss a minimum of eight games after the Carolina Panthers placed the three-time Pro Bowl tight end on injured reserve with a broken right foot.

The earliest Olsen is eligible to return is Nov. 26 when Panthers visit the New York Jets. The injury ends Olsen’s streak of 160 consecutive games played. It’s the second longest active streak among tight ends behind Dallas’ Jason Witten (221).

Carolina replaced Olsen on the 53man roster with rookie fullback Alex Armah from the practice squad.

RG III disputes accusation

Santana Moss says Robert Griffin III took credit for coach Mike Shanahan and offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan being fired by the Washington Redskins.

During his weekly D.C. radio appearance on Monday, Moss says it bothered him that Griffin acted like the Shanahans’ treatment of him was what got them fired after the 2013 season. Griffin responded on Twitter, saying, “To openly lie about me is a betrayal.”

Griffin tweets that he was the “good soldier” in an “impossible situation” with the Redskins after Shanahan said he never wanted him as his quarterback.

Moss says Griffin taking joy in the Shanahans being fired was “the dumbest mistake you can ever make in this league” and adds that when Jay Gruden was hired as coach, he ripped Griffin in meetings because he wasn’t doing the things needed to win football games.

Jaguars bolster receiving corp

The Jaguars have claimed receiver Jaelen Strong off waivers from the Houston Texans, providing them depth with Allen Robinson and Dede Westbrook on injured reserve.

A third-round draft pick in 2015, Strong has 28 receptions for 292 yards and three touchdowns. The Texans waived him Monday.

Robinson tore a knee ligament in the opener and had season-ending surgery. Westbrook, the 2016 Biletnikoff Award winner and a Heisman Trophy finalist, had core muscle surgery and will miss at least the first eight games of the regular season.

Browns wide receiver Corey Coleman has been placed on injured reserve after having surgery on his broken right hand.

The No. 15 overall pick in the 2016 draft can return to practice in six weeks and would be eligible to play in a game after eight weeks.

Jets waive receiver/returner

The New York Jets waived wide receiver Kalif Raymond, two days after his fumbled punt changed momentum in the team’s loss at Oakland.

Raymond was claimed off waivers by the Jets on Sept. 3 after he played his rookie season with Denver last year. He served as New York’s primary returner on punts and kickoffs in the first two games, but he mishandled two punts in the opener at Buffalo as well.

Chiefs lead power ranking

Of the eight teams off to 2-0 starts this season, perhaps the most impressive has been the Kansas City Chiefs, which grabbed the top spot in the latest AP Pro32 poll, which was released on Tuesday.

The AFC West, which has three of the 2-0 teams, also has three teams in the top six: the Raiders at No. 3 and Denver at No. 6.

The Atlanta Falcons moved up three spots to No. 2, with New England slipping a spot to No. 5.
