Three-way tie atop Tour Championship

-

Justin Thomas hit 5-iron to 6 feet for an eagle on 18th hole at the Tour Championship on Friday and moved one step closer to a $10 million bonus.

That eagle gave Thomas, already a five-time winner and a major champion this year, a 4-under 66 and a share of the lead with Paul Casey and Webb Simpson going into the weekend at East Lake.

The Fed Ex Cup and its $10 million prize still lacks clarity, mainly because the Tour Championship is so wide open.

Thomas, Casey (67) and Simpson (67) were at 7-under 133, and Jon Rahm was among four players just one shot off the lead.

Still in the mix is Dustin Johnson, who again didn’t get much out of his round but still was just four shots back.

MCCARRON OUT FRONT AT PEBBLE BEACH >>

Scott McCarron shot an 8-under 63 to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the PGA Tour Champions’ Pure Insurance Championship.

McCarron had seven birdies and an eagle to go along with a bogey to set a new record on the par71 Poppy Hills course. He broke the previous mark set by Jonathan De Los Reyes in 2015 and matched later that year by Olin Browne at this event.

Bernhard Langer was in second, followed Kevin Sutherland another two shots back after a 66.

Soccer SOLO SETTLES WITH U.S. SOCCER >>

Hope Solo has settled a grievance with U.S. Soccer over her suspension from the women’s national team following comments she made at the Rio Olympics.

The 35-year-old goalkeeper was suspended for six months and her contract with the federation was terminated after she called the Swedish team “a bunch of cowards” following the U.S. team’s quarterfinal loss. Details of the settlement, however, were not released.

“We have amicably resolved the matter and are moving forward in a positive way,” Solo said.

U.S. Soccer said in a statement: “Hope Solo has been a fierce competitor for the women’s national team. She has set new standards for goalkeeping in the U.S. and around the world, and helped the U.S. women’s national team achieve its historic on field success. We have amicably resolved the matter and are moving forward in a positive way.”

Motor sports KYLE BUSCH ON NASCAR POLE >>

Kyle Busch turned a lap of 135.049 mph to win the pole at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon.

Busch took the top spot for the second straight week in NASCAR’s version of the playoffs. Busch dominated early in the postseason opener at Chicagoland Speedway until miscues on pit road sent him to a 15thplace finish.

Kyle Larson, who won the pole in July at New Hampshire, joins Busch on the front row. Larson was second in the first Cup race at the track.

Playoff drivers took 13 of the top 14 spots. The 16-driver field is sliced to 12 after next weekend’s race at Dover.

Denny Hamlin, Ryan Blaney and Martin Truex Jr. fill out the rest of the top five. Truex won last week’s race at Chicagoland.
