Arizona State able to hold off No. 24 Oregon

-

Freshman Brandon Ruiz kicked a 41-yard field goal with 2:33 to play and Arizona State held on to upset No. 24 Oregon 37-35 on Saturday night in the Pac-12 opener for both teams.

The win ended the Sun Devils’ 10-game losing streak to the Ducks.

Manny Wilkins completed 24 of 39 passes for 347 yards and a touchdown and ran for two more scores as Arizona State beat the Ducks for the first time since 2004. K’Neal Harry caught seven passes for a career-best 170 yards and a score.

The Ducks’ Justin Herbert completed 19 of 35 for 281 yards and three scores.

Oregon (3-1, 0-1 Pac12), a 13-point favorite going into the game, trailed throughout by as many as 17 points until Herbert threw 51 yards to Jacob Breeland and scored on a 5-yard quarterback draw to put the Ducks up 35-34 with 6:41 to play.

But the Sun Devils responded.

Arizona State (2-2, 1-0) converted a crucial third-and-6 play on a 10yard pass from Wilkins to Jalen Harvey to get Arizona State into range for the winning field goal.

The Ducks drove past midfield but, on fourth down, Herbert’s scramble fell just shy of enough for the first down.

Oregon had one more chance after forcing Arizona State to punt with 50 seconds to play but never got out of its own territory.

Herbert threw touchdown passes of 20 yards to Johnny Johnson III and 22 to Tony Brooks-James to cut the Arizona State lead to 31-28 with 4:33 still left in the third quarter. WASHINGTON 37, COLORADO 10 >> Jordan Miller’s two interceptions and Myles Bryant’s pick-6 helped the seventh-ranked Huskies overcame a slow start and hand the Buffaloes their first loss on a cold, rainy night at Folsom Field.

Myles Gaskin rushed for 202 yards and two touchdowns for the Huskies (40, 1-0), who didn’t manhandle Colorado (3-1, 1-1) from the start like they did in a 41-10 rout of Colorado in last year’s Pac-12 championship. WASHINGTON STATE 45, NEVADA 7 >> Luke Falk threw five touchdown passes, and the No. 18 Cougars (40) beat the visiting Wolf Pack (0-4) for the team’s best start in 16 years.

Washington State, which opened the 2001 season by winning its first seven games, piled up 560 yards of offense and five sacks. SAN DIEGO STATE 28, AIR FORCE 24 >> Rashaad Penny scored three times, including a 53-yard scamper with 5:39 remaining, and the No. 22 Aztecs (40, 1-0 Mountain West) held off the Falcons (1-2, 0-1) in

a game that was delayed 88 minutes by lightning. Penny finished with 128 yards rushing, which was 68 below his season average.

OHIO STATE 54, UNLV 21 >> J.T. Barrett threw touchdown passes to five different receivers in the first half, and the No. 10 Buckeyes (3-1) cruised past UNLV (1-2).

Barrett, who has taken the brunt of the criticism for Ohio State’s inconsistent passing game this season, was barely slowed by an outgunned UNLV defense, completing 12 of 17 passes for 209 yards before handing the game over to backup Dwayne Haskins near the end of the first half. NEW MEXICO 16, TULSA 13 >> Jason Sanders kicked a 53yard field goal with three seconds on the clock, lifting the Lobos (2-2) past Tulsa (1-3).

It was the second straight game that Tulsa has lost by a last-second field goal.
