A registered sex offender who recently moved from Illinois was arrested after he allegedly exposed himself to a 12-year-old girl as she walked home from school last week, according to San Jose police.

Nakia Kali, 42, who moved to San Jose in July, was booked into the Santa Clara County jail on suspicion of several indecent-exposure-related offenses. He has since been released from custody after posting bail.

The girl was walking on West Hedding Street between Second and 11th streets around 3 p.m. Sept. 20 when a man in a car pulled up next to her, Officer Gina Tepoorten said.

“He drove up alongside her, and that’s when she first (saw) the sexual act inside the vehicle,” Tepoorten said.

The girl called her parents, and after her father picked her up, she pointed out the suspect to him.

“They were able to get a license plate number for the vehicle, and a good description,” Tepoorten said.

Investigators looked up the plate information for the red 2008 Dodge Caliber and served a search warrant Friday at Kali’s home in San Jose, and he was arrested without incident.

Records show that he is a registered sex offender for a conviction about three years ago for similar offenses in Cook County, Illinois. His last listed residence there was in Bourbonnais, a city about 50 miles south of Chicago. Police said he registered with San Jose police upon arriving in the city, but had not provided a required DNA sample for local authorities.

Kali was booked on suspicion of indecent exposure with a prior offense, annoying or molesting a minor with a prior offense, committing a lewd act in public, omitting certain information from his sex offender registration and failing to provide DNA within 30 days.
