No. 3 ranked runner in NFL listed as questionable with an oblique injury

Carlos Hyde, the 49ers most productive offensive player this season, was listed as questionable in advance of Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals.

Coach Kyle Shanahan said after practice Friday that Hyde will be a gametime decision.

“He’s definitely still hurting,’’ Shanahan said.

Though officially listed on the team’s injury report with a hip injury, Shanahan classified the concern as an oblique injury.

Matt Breida is listed as the No. 2 running back on the 49ers depth chart followed by Raheem Mostert.

Hyde currently ranks third in the NFL with 253 rushing yards. He trails only Kareem Hunt of the Kansas City Chiefs (401) and Dalvin Cook of the Minnesota Vikings (288). Hyde’s 12 catches are the most by a 49ers running back through three weeks since Frank Gore had

22 in 2010.

Talking in general about several 49ers players listed as questionable this week, Shanahan said: “We’re optimistic that they’ll go.”

Hyde sustained his injury early against the Los Angeles Rams last Thursday but later returned to action and ran well. He was a limited participant in practice on Wednesday and Thursday.

On Friday, during the warm-up portion of practice open to the media, Hyde looked fine as he went through deep stretches and agility drills.

“He got out there a little bit more today,’’ Shanahan said.

• In other injury news, linebacker Brock Coyle, fullback Kyle Juszczyk and safety Jaquiski Tartt are also listed as questionable with concussions.

“When it comes to concussions, I don’t try to ever

predict,’’ Shanahan said. “Things can change and you never know fully what to expect. You have to be very safe with that stuff.”

• Larry Fitzgerald, 34, looks as threatening as ever to a 49ers defense even though the Cardinals star is in his 14th season.

“They’re pretty much the same as they’ve been over the years: still trying to get Larry the ball,” 49ers linebacker NaVorro Bowman said of a Cardinals offense that lost running back David Johnson to wrist surgery after the season opener.

Now 205 games into a likely Hall of Fame career, his 1,147 receptions are more than any other receiver at that stage, although only 12 more than Jerry Rice.

Fitzgerald has more yards against the 49ers than any other team, and his 105 career touchdown catches rank eighth alltime (Rice leads with 197). Sixteen of Fitzgerald’s TD catches have come against the 49ers, including four as the Cardinals have won the past four meetings.

“He’s a slower guy, and a lot of people think because he’s slowed down, it’s just going to be easy,” cornerback Rashard Robinson said. “But he still knows how to get open. He knows when the ’backers are going somewhere. He knows defenses and he knows alignments. He’s a hell of a player.”

• K’Waun Williams signed a three-year contract extension after the nickel cornerback made a strong

early impression on the rebuilding 49ers.

“Since joining us this offseason, K’Waun has displayed every trait and characteristic we want to see from our players,” general manager John Lynch said in a statement announcing the deal.

In three games this season (one start) Williams, 26, has 14 tackles and two passes defensed. The 5-foot9, 183-pound defensive back originally signed in February.

• The 49ers lagging pass rush has a chance to rack up sacks in a hurry this weekend. The Cardinals offensive line will be without Mike Iupati (triceps) and Alex Boone (chest), while tackle D.J. Humphries (knee) is listed as questionable.
