Washington State travels well, routs Ducks

- By The Associated Press

Luke Falk threw for 282 yards and three touchdowns and No. 11 Washington State held Oregon scoreless after the first quarter for a 33-10 victory Saturday night.

The Cougars (6-0, 3-0 Pac-12) were on their first trip after quirky scheduling gave them their first five games at home. The team is off to its best start since winning seven to start the 2001 season.

True freshman Braxton Burmeister, in his first college start, threw for 145 yards and a touchdown for Oregon (4-2, 1-2). He also threw two interceptions.

Justin Herbert started at quarterback for the Ducks to start the season, but he broke his collarbone in Oregon’s 45-24 win over Cal last weekend.

Running back Royce Freeman, who also left the game against Cal because of injury, ran 16 yards on his first carry. He finished with 62 yards rushing.

The Cougars were coming off a statement-making 30-27 victory over USC, which pushed Washington State to its highest AP ranking since the end of the 2003 season.

USC 38, OREGON STATE 10 >> Sam Darnold threw for 316 yards and three touchdowns, Ronald Jones II rushed for one touchdown and the No. 14 Trojans defeated the Beavers.

Tyler Vaughns and Josh Falo each caught their first career touchdown reception as the Trojans (5-1, 3-1 Pac12) bounced backed strongly from last week’s 30-27 loss at No. 11 Washington State.

The Beavers (1-5, 0-3) recovered a muffed punt at the USC 29 and Darnold’s fumble at the USC 23 when the ball slipped from his hand while attempting a pass, but failed to score on either possession.

ARIZONA 45, COLORADO 42 >> Backup quarterback Khalil Tate rushed for 327 yards, the second-most in school history, and accounted for five touchdowns to help the Wildcats hold off the Buffaloes.

Tate entered the game after Brandon Dawkins took a late hit out of bounds on the opening drive. Dawkins stood on the sideline with his helmet in his hand as Tate orchestrated the offense to near perfection.

The elusive Tate had TD runs of 58, 28, 47 and 75 yards. He also threw for 142 yards, including a 13yard

TD pass to Shun Brown, as the Wildcats (3-2, 1-1 Pac-12) won at Folsom Field for a third straight time on a night when both offenses gained more than 500 yards.

Phillip Lindsay sparked the offense for Colorado (3-3, 0-3) with a career-high 281 yards rushing on a school-record 41 carries and three touchdowns. SAN DIEGO STATE 41, UNLV 10 >> Rashaad Penny ran for 170 yards and two touchdowns to lift the No. 19 Aztecs (6-0, 2-0 Mountain West) over the Rebels (2-3, 1-1). It was Penny’s sixth straight 100-yard game to open the season.

NAVY 48, AIR FORCE 45 >> Zach Abey threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Carmona with 15 seconds left, and the unbeaten Midshipmen (50) recovered at home after blowing a 21-point lead in the second half. Arion Worthman threw a 51-yard TD pass to Marcus Bennett with 1:53 remaining to put Air Force (1-4) up 45-41. Abey then took the Middies 75 yards in 11 plays for the go-ahead score.

That turned out to be the final salvo in a wild game in which Air Force amassed 621 yards and Navy accumulated 557.
