Nadal, Garcia win crowns in China

Rafael Nadal beat Nick Kyrgios of Australia 6-2, 6-1 in the China Open final in Beijing on Sunday to win his sixth ATP title of the year, while Caroline Garcia defeated soon-to-be-No. 1 Simona Halep 6-4, 7-6 (3) in the women’s event.

Top-ranked Nadal, who was tied with Roger Federer and Alexander Zverev at five titles this season, picked up his 75th career singles trophy with the win.

The 15th-ranked Garcia, who lost to Halep the two previous times they played, won her second consecutiv­e WTA title. The Frenchwoma­n will make her top10 debut when the new rankings come out today.

For Halep, the loss was particular­ly disappoint­ing, as she was unable to back up her guaranteed debut in the No. 1 ranking today. She secured the top spot on Saturday with her semifinal victory over Jelena Ostapenko. GOFFIN TAKES JAPAN TITLE >> David Goffin atoned for his defeat in the Japan Open final last year by winning it on Sunday, beating Adrian Mannarino 6-3, 7-5 in Tokyo.

College football

PENN STATE CRACKS TOP 3 >> Penn State moved up to No. 3 in The AP college football poll, and Washington State and Auburn jumped into the top 10 for the first time this season after six ranked teams lost this weekend.

Alabama and Clemson still hold the top spots. The topranked Crimson Tide received 43 first-place votes, and the second-ranked Tigers had 18. The Nittany Lions have their best ranking since 2008, moving up one spot and taking advantage of the biggest upset of the season so far.

Oklahoma lost at home to Iowa State, dropping the Sooners from No. 3 to 12. Michigan also lost for the first time and fell to No. 17.

Washington State is No. 8 and Auburn moved up to 10.

Behind Penn State, Georgia at No. 4 and Washington at No. 5 also moved up one spot after convincing victories. TCU moved up two spots to No. 6, and No. 7 Wisconsin and No. 9 Ohio State round out the top 10.

Wright had to be carried off the sideline on a stretcher. Coach Mark Stoops did not elaborate on what caused the player to collapse.

EGYPT BACK IN TOURNEY >> Mohamed Salah scored from a penalty kick deep into injury time to send Egypt to the World Cup and end a near 30-year wait for Africa’s most successful team.

Salah scored both of Egypt’s goals in a 2-1 home win over the Republic of Congo as Egypt qualified for the first time since 1990.

POLAND QUALIFIES >> Poland secured its spot in the World Cup with a 4-2 win over Montenegro in Warsaw.

MARATHON >> Galen Rupp won the Chicago Marathon to become the first American winner in 15 years. He finished in 2 hours, 9 minutes, 20 seconds. Ethiopia’s Tirunesh Dibaba won the women’s race in 2:18:31.
