Vikings add Bridgewater to roster

-

The Minnesota Vikings’ seemingly constant search for long-term success and stability at quarterback took another turn Wednesday.

Sam Bradford’s future was cast in further doubt because of another knee surgery, and Teddy Bridgewater finally made his way back to the active roster fromhis devastating knee injury.

Meanwhile, coach Mike Zimmer announced Case Keenum will make his seventh start of the season for Sunday’s game at Washington.

“Case has done great,” Zimmer said. “So we just keep going from there and see how this thing plays out.”

The Vikings (6-2) activated Bridgewater from the physically unable to perform list, adding him to the active roster for the first timein more than 14 months since his left knee was dislocated during practice. The freak injury resulted in ligament tears and an ambulance ride to the emergency room to save his leg.

The Vikings faced a deadline on Wednesday at the end of the three-week window that opened when Bridgewater resumed practice with the team.

To make room on the 53- man roster, Bradford was placed on injured reserve after having arthroscopic surgery the day before on his left knee, which had ACL tears in 2013 and 2014.

Zimmer said “no one knows” when asked if Bradford will play again.

Enter Bridgewater, the 2014 first-round draft pick who was on track to take over as the franchise quarterback after passing for 3,231 yards, 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions while helping the Vikings win the NFC North in 2015.

Unhappy with Godell

Aperson with knowledge of the situation said Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has threatened to sue the NFL over a proposed contract extension for Commissioner Roger Goodell, a dispute sparked by star running back Ezekiel Elliott’s six- game suspension over alleged domestic violence.

Jones told the six owners on the compensation committee he had hired attorney David Boies and was prepared to sue if the group voted to extend Goodell’s deal, according to the source.

Jones also has expressed disapproval with the structure and compensation in the contract extension, another source said.

All 32 owners voted in May to extend Goodell’s contract and authorized the compensation committee to work out the details. Goodell suspended Elliott in August after a year long NFL investigation. Prosecutors in Ohio declined to pursue the domestic violence case.

While not on the compensation committee, Jones has expressed frustration over the NFL’s pursuit of criminal matters with its own investigators.

Bye, bye Bennett

The Green Bay Packers waived Martellus Bennett, bringing the tight end’s short tenure at Lambeau Field to a surprising end.

The Packers cited a “failure to disclose a physical condition” for making the move. Bennett was added to the injury report after the bye last week with a shoulder injury. He did not play in the 30-17 loss on Monday to the Detroit Lions.

Bennett also posted on Instagram during the bye week a message that indicated he was thinking about retirement.

Winston being cautious

QB Jameis Winston said consulting Dr. James Andrews about his sore throwing shoulder was “standard protocol” and not an indication the injury isworse than he and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers initially believed.

“I’ve known Dr. Andrews for a long time,” Winston said. “All the doctors are working together to come up with what they think. All I know is for the next two weeks I’m going to be rehabbing to get the shoulder 100 percent.”

The Bucs announced Monday that the third-year pro, who sprained the AC joint in his right shoulder on Oct. 15, willmiss at least two games after aggravating the injury during last week’s loss at New Orleans.

Coach Dirk Koetter reiterated doctors believe the best course of action is rest.

On Sunday, Ryan Fitzpatrick will replace Winston, who’s made 40 consecutive starts to begin his pro career.

Amoment for vets

The NFL players union wants everyone in the league to honor a two-minute moment of silence Sunday in observance of U. S. military veterans.

With Veterans Day falling on Saturday this year, the NFLPA voted to ask the NFL community to observe this moment of silence Sunday prior to kickoffs.
