Santa Clara women reach second round of NCAAs
Santa Clara women’s soccer team went on the road to top Cal 2-1 on Saturday and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Broncos (14-6-1) jumped out to a quick lead and played with a man advantage for 87 minutes after a red card was issued to the Bears (13-6-1). Despite the advantage, Cal was able to keep it close and tied the game in the first half.
Kelsey Turnbow — the West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year – hit the game-winner for Santa Clara in the 64th minute. She got the ball and dribbled inside the box before hitting a shot far post that made it 2-1.
In the third minute Maddy Gonzalez was taken down just outside the box and Indigo Gibson was given a red card for her tackle from behind. Gudrun Arnardottir took the chance and buried it in the back of the net to give the Broncos an early 1-0 lead.
Miranda Nild tied the game for Cal 20 minutes later.
The Broncos play Vanderbilt in South Carolina on Friday with time TBA.
BIG WIN FOR STANFORD
WOMEN >> The host and topseeded Cardinal (19-1-0) scored a postseason record for goals in beating Utah Valley State 9-1 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Stanford entertains Auburn on Friday in the second round. Stanford led 6-1 at halftime on goals by Madison Haley, Civana Kuhlmann, Jaye Boissiere, Catarina Macario and Belle Briede. Haley added a second-half goal, and Sam Tran scored twice to finish the rout. Golf MARATHON IN MEXICO >> Rickie Fowler woke up at 5 a.m. and played three holes in the OHL Classic at Mayakoba. It was enough to get him a three-way share of the 36-hole lead going into a marathon finish in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. Fowler and Patrick Rodgers had to wait out a five-hour rain delay just to resume their second round. Fowler saved par from a bunker on the 18th hole for a 4-under 67. Rodgers finally make his first bogey of the tournament on his 17th hole had to settle for a 65. They shared the lead at 10-under 132 along with Patton Kizzire, who hasn’t hit a shot since his 70 on Friday.
DEFENDING CHAMP PAUL GOYDOS OPENS LEAD IN
PHOENIX >> Defending champion Paul Goydos took a one-stroke lead in the PGA Tour Champions’ seasonending Charles Schwab Cup Championship. Goydos shot a 5-under 66 to reach 12-under 130 at Phoenix Country Club. Lee Janzen was second after a 67. Bernhard Langer, trying to sweep the three playoff events and win the season points title for the fourth straight year and fifth overall, was tied for 22nd.
FENG TO BECOME CHINA’S
FIRST NO. 1 >> Shanshan Feng shot a 2-under 70 in the final round to win the Blue Bay LPGA in Hainan, China, by one stroke. With the win, Feng is projected to become the first topranked golfer male or female from China. Feng finished at 9-under 279. Thailand’s Moriya Jutanugarn (70) was second.

BYRON RACES INTO XFINITY CHAMPIONSHIP >> Justin Allgaier, William Byron, Elliott Sadler and Daniel Hemric took the four spots next week in the Xfinity Series championship race. All four berths in the championship were on the line at Phoenix Raceway, where Byron raced to his fourth victory of the season. The other three drivers made it into the Homestead-Miami finale on points.
BOTTAS ON POLE IN BRAZIL
>> Valtteri Bottas claimed pole position for the Brazilian Grand Prix in Sao Paulo from a qualifying session in which Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton crashed on the first lap. Hamilton, who won his fourth Formula One championship two weeks ago, walked away from the car without injury and will start at the back.

CAL IN SEMIFINALS >> Cal defeated Arizona State 26-10 and Utah 24-17 at the PAC 12 Rugby 7s Championship in Tucson, Arizona, qualifying the Bears for a Sunday morning semifinal against UCLA at Kino Stadium. Cal is going for its sixth straight conference 7s title.
Tennis
U.S. WOMEN TIED >> U.S. Open champion Sloane Stephens lost in three sets to Aryna Sabalenka as host Belarus and the United States ended the opening day of the Fed Cup final even at 1-1 in Minsk. Sabalenka beat Stephens 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 after CoCo Vandeweghe defeated Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-4, 6-4.
