49ERS VS. GIANTS
SITE: Levi’s Stadium KICKOFF: 1:25 p.m. TV: Fox Ch. 2 (Chris Myers, Daryl Johnston, Laura Okmin)
RADIO: 680 AM & 107.7 FM (Ted Robinson, Tim Ryan)
THREE KEYS 1. Quarterback pressure:. Whichever quarterback the 49ers deploy — C.J. Beathard is the slated starter, Jimmy Garoppolo is eager to debut — they must do a better job in protection. Beathard’s 16 hits last game were brutal, and the Giants can do more of the same with Jason Pierre-Paul. On the flip side, Eli Manning will be making his 208th straight start and defensive coordinator Robert Saleh’s mission is to “find a way to make him uncomfortable.”
2. Seize the day: This is the 49ers’ best shot at a win all season if you factor in their opponent’s record and a win-at-all-costs mentality heading into the bye. Several injured players practiced this past week rather than rest up for that bye, indicating a renewed sense of urgency to not only win their first game this season but their first in their past 12 home games.
3. Feed Hyde: It’s not ideal to give Carlos Hyde almost as many pass targets (11) as rushing carries (12) like last game’s pass-oriented strategy. Hyde needs to run more to help out a weakened passing attack. He was in an upbeat mood all week, perhaps knowing a big day against one of the league’s worst run defenses (tied for 28) could further boost a contract bid.
INJURIES: 49ers — Out: Tight end George Kittle (knee), wide receiver Trent Taylor (rib), linebacker Elijah Lee (knee), defensive end Aaron Lynch (calf); Questionable: Defensive tackle Solomon Thomas (knee), cornerback K’Waun Williams (quadricep). Giants — Out: Linebackers B.J. Goodson (ankle), Devon Kennard (quadriceps) and Keenan Robinson (quadriceps); Doubtful: cornerback Donte Deayon (ankle); Questionable: linebackers Jonathan Casillas (neck), Calvin Munson (quadriceps), defensive ends Olivier Vernon (ankle) and Kerry Wynn (knee).
