Allen has senior moment to lead young Duke
Stanford, minus three injured players, falls to Eastern Washington
Grayson Allen, Duke’s lone senior, scored a career-high 37 points, freshman Trevon Duval had 17 points and 10 assists, and the top-ranked Blue Devils beat No. 2 Michigan State 8881 in the Champions Classic in Chicago on Tuesday night.
On a court full of some of college basketball’s brightest stars, Allen stepped up whenever his team needed a big play. The Blue Devils (30) lost Marvin Bagley III to an eye injury midway through the first half, but Allen made five 3-pointers and scored 23 points in the second half to help make up for the missing freshman phenom.
Michigan State (1-1) shot 51 percent from the field, but was outrebounded 46-34 by the Blue Devils.
EASTERN WASHINGTON 67, STANFORD 61 >> Bogdan Bliznyuk scored 23 points to help Eastern Washington, which hit 11 3-pointers, beat the Cardinal and get its first win against a Pac-12 team in nearly 15 years.
The Eagles (1-1) snapped a 21-game losing streak against Pac-12 schools, dating to a 62-58 win over Washington on Dec. 14, 2002. Coach Shantay Legans spent three seasons as a player at Stanford’s rival Cal but never got a victory on the Cardinal’s floor.
Eastern Washington was down 9-2 early but never trailed over the game’s final 29 minutes, despite missing six free throws down the stretch.
Reid Travis scored 20 points to lead the Cardinal (2-1), which started three freshmen and shot 34 percent from the field, including 2 for 16 on 3-pointers.
Stanford played without three injured players, starting guard Dorian Pickens and reserves Marcus Sheffield and Kodye Pugh.
KANSAS 65, KENTUCKY 61 >> Svi Mykhailiuk scored 17 points, and Devonte Graham hit the clinching free throws for the No. 4 Jayhawks. In a game that matched the two winningest Division I programs, the Jayhawks prevailed after the teams spent most of the second half trading baskets and leads. Malik Newman had
a key rebound in the closing seconds and hit two foul shots to help Kansas knock off the No. 7 Wildcats (2-1). GONZAGA 106, HOWARD 69 >> Freshman Zach Norvell Jr. scored 18 points and freshman Corey Kispert added 13 for the 2-0 Bulldogs. Johnathan Williams and Rui Hachimura each scored 12 points for No. 17 Gonzaga.
R.J. Cole scored 16 points for Howard (0-3).
Howard shot just 30 percent in the game and was outrebounded 51-33. Gonzaga made 14 3-pointers. PURDUE 86, MARQUETTE 71 >> Sevenfoot-2 center Isaac Haas scored 22 points, and the No. 19 Boilermakers (3-0) capitalized on their size advantage
in the paint to beat Marquette.
Women
SANTA CLARA 68, UC SANTA BARBARA 63>> Kayla Martin and Dru Toleafoa each scored 17 points as the Broncos (1-1 beat the Gauchos (1-1). Martin also dealt 11 assists.
BAYLOR 86, CENTRAL ARKANSAS 55 >> Lauren Cox and Kalani Brown both had double-doubles and Baylor’s other three starters also scored in double figures as the No. 3 Lady Bears beat Central Arkansas.
Natalie Chou added 11 points with all three of her 3s coming at key times for the Lady Bears (3-0), who opened the season with three wins in five days.
