UCLA fires Mora after loss to USC

UCLA fired football coach Jim Mora with one regular-season game left in his sixth season — and on his 56th birthday.

Athletic director Dan Guerrero announced the shocking move one day after rival USC’s 28-23 victory over UCLA (5-6, 3-5 Pac-12). Offensive coordinato­r Jedd Fisch will coach the Bruins in their regular-season home finale against Cal on Friday night.

UCLA must pay more than $12 million to buy out the remainder of Mora’s contract.

THOMPSON MISSES 2-FOOTER >> Lexi Thompson won $1 million for the CME Race to the Globe and left so much more behind in the LPGA Tour’s final event.

Thompson was poised to win the CME Group Tour Championsh­ip and LPGA player of the year until she jabbed at a 2-foot par putt and missed it on the 18th hole at Tiburon Golf Club. That paved the way for Ariya Jutanugarn, who birdied her last two holes for a 5-under 67 and a oneshot victory.

The points-based LPGA player of the year was a tie between So Yeon Ryu and LPGA rookie Sung Hyun Park.

COOK WINS RSM CLASSIC >> PGA Tour rookie Austin Cook won the RSM Classic, closing with two birdies for a 3-under 67 in the final PGA Tour event and earning a spot in the Masters.

College football

TIDE STILL NO. 1 >> The top nine teams in The Associated Press college football poll have held onto their spots, led by No. 1 Alabama, while Northweste­rn and Boise State moved into the Top 25 for the first time this season.

Alabama, top ranked since the preseason, received 58 first-place votes on Sunday. No. 2 Miami received three first-place votes. Stanford remained at No. 20.

U.S. GREAT SEGURA DIES >> Pancho Segura, who rose from poverty to win six U.S. Pro singles and doubles championsh­ips and was one of the world’s top amateur players in the 1940s and profession­als in the 1950s, has died. He was 96.

Men’s soccer

STANFORD WINS ON PKS >> No. 9 Stanford didn’t score a goal in regulation or two overtimes, but advanced to the Round of 16 by holding off Pacific 4-1 on penalty kicks. Stanford hosts Coastal Carolina at 5 p.m. on Sunday.

DONS BOW OUT >> USF’s run at the NCAA tournament ended in a 3-2 second-round loss at No. 4 seeded Louisville.

CARDINAL ADVANCES >> Topseeded Stanford advanced to the quarterfin­als of the NCAA tournament with a 1-0 win over Florida State. Jordan DiBiasi scored her fifth game-winning goal of the season for the Cardinal (21-1-0), which hosts Penn State at 2 p.m. on Friday. BRONCOS BOUNCED >> Santa Clara was eliminated from the NCAA tournament with a 1-0 loss at No. 1 seeded South Carolina.
