Stanford stumbles, falls in OT

Kelsey Mitchell scored six of her game-high 37 points in overtime to lead No. 9 Ohio State to a 94-82 victory over No. 14 Stanford on Saturday night in the Play4Kay Shootout in Las Vegas.

Trailing by nine points after three quarters, the Buckeyes (7-1) outscored Stanford 27-18 in the fourth quarter to force overtime, and then went on a 13-0 run in the extra period to seal the win. Stanford missed its last six field goal attempts, and was held scoreless for the final 2:51 of overtime.

Asia Doss gave Ohio State its first lead of the contest when she knocked down a 3-pointer from the corner with 5:09 left in the game, then scored the Buckeyes’ first seven points in overtime.

Alanna Smith led Stanford (4-3) with 33 points and 16 rebounds.

MISSOURI 55, CAL 52 >> Amber Smith and Sophie Cunningham scored 11 points apiece, and the No. 23 Tigers handed the No. 21 Bears a rare loss in the Cal Classic at Haas Pavilion.

The Tigers (5-1) won the championsh­ip by making 9 of 18 3-pointers, the biggest by Jordan Chavis with 3:16 to play after the Golden Bears (3-2) had erased an eight-point deficit to tie the game.

Cal had won 13 straight nonconfere­nce home games, five of the past five tournament­s and 21 tournament titles since it was switched to the four-team format in 1983.

Asha Thomas, who led the Bears with 14 points, missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer and the Tigers held on.

Cal set a record with 17 made 3-pointers in the opening game Friday. However, Missouri held the Bears to 16 attempts, just six makes. Ionescu had 18 points in the second half and finished one off her career high for the Ducks (5-1) to go with seven rebounds and six assists. The Beavers used an 8-0 run to close within one with 5:49 to play and were down by three when Brown took over. Only the third ever matchup between the Southeaste­rn Conference and Big 10 programs was marred by a near brawl involving Minnesota’s Dupree McBrayer and Alabama’s Dazon Ingram in front of the Crimson Tide bench 6:21 into the second half. Just 27 seconds earlier, Minnesota’s Nate Mason and Sexton were each assessed technical fouls for talking to each other, and the Golden Gophers senior guard was ejected.

During the fracas, Alabama players Donta Hall, Alex Reese, Daniel Giddens, Avery Johnson Jr. and Herbert Jones came off the bench and were ejected. PITINO A CHEERLEADE­R >> Former Louisville head coach Rick Pitino said he is “living vicariousl­y” through his son, University of Minnesota men’s basketball coach Richard Pitino, in an interview at Barclays Center.

Pitino, who was fired by Louisville’s Athletic Associatio­n in October following a federal investigat­ion into corruption within the men’s basketball program, has been in New York during the Thanksgivi­ng weekend taking in the 14th-ranked Golden Gophers, who are participat­ing in the Barclays Center Classic.

“I’m a cheerleade­r,” Pitino said, when asked if he can watch his son coach. “I just root for him every possession. For me, being out of work, I am living vicariousl­y through him.”
