Landale hits for 37 in Saint Mary’s win

Jock Landale set career highs with 37 points and 18 rebounds on Monday night and host Saint Mary’s beat Sacramento State 70-54 for the Gaels’ second straight win.

Landale had 24 points and 12 rebounds and made 11 of 14 shots in the first half while Saint Mary’s (7-2) built a 32-19 lead. The Gaels held the Hornets to 7-of-25 (28 percent) shooting and had a 25-11 edge on the glass in the period. Landale finished the game 14 of 20 from the field and 9 of 10 from the foul line.

Calvin Hermanson made a pair of 3s for Saint Mary’s, passing Frank Allocco (197) for third in program history. The senior forward ended the night at 198 for his career with David Sivulich (238) and Matthew Dellavedov­a (288) still ahead of him.

Izayah Mauriohooh­oo-Le’Afa led Sacramento State with 20 points.

The Hornets (1-7) pulled within 55-45 with six minutes to go but never got closer.

FLORIDA STATE 83, FLORIDA 66 >> Terance Mann scored 25 points, CJ Walker added 17 and the Seminoles (7-0) upset the No. 5 Gators (5-2) to remain undefeated.

The Seminoles also extended their winning streak against the Gators (5-2) to four, their longest in the 68game history of the series.

Florida State’s length and athleticis­m posed problems all night. The Seminoles altered shots, forced turnovers, controlled the boards and didn’t allow Florida many clean looks, especially from long range.

Coach Mike White pleaded with his Gators to be more physical at halftime, but they didn’t respond. Now, Florida has a two-game losing streak and questions about their lofty ranking..

The Bears (6-2) lost their only two games last week to Top 25 opponents and slipped seven spots in the new poll released Monday.

Baylor broke open the game early with a 12-0 run that made it 24-11. Another 12-0 spurt early in the second half stretched the Bears’ lead to 52-27.

Nuni Omot added 15 points and Tristan Clark had 14 on 6-of-7 shooting. Manu Lecomte scored 12 points while Jake Lindsey and Mark Vital had 11 each.

LIANGELO BALL TO WITHDRAW FROM UCLA >> The father of UCLA guard LiAngelo Ball says he plans to withdraw his son from school because of concerns related to the freshman’s indefinite suspension for his participat­ion in a shopliftin­g incident during the Bruins’ trip to China.

The younger Ball, along with freshmen Jalen Hill and Cody Riley, have been barred from all team activities as part of their suspension for shopliftin­g from three high-end stores last month when UCLA opened its season overseas.

LaVar Ball told the Los Angeles Times and ESPN on Monday that he’s going to explore other options for LiAngelo because “I’m not going to let him sit back and not practice.”

The elder Ball says he hasn’t spoken to the school about withdrawin­g his son. “I’m taking him and I’m gone,” he told the Times.

“We learned today of LiAngelo Ball’s intention to withdraw from UCLA,” coach Steve Alford said in a statement. “We respect the decision he and his family have made, and we wish him all the best in the future. ”LiAngelo is the middle child of Ball’s three sons. Oldest son Lonzo is a rookie with the Lakers after playing one successful season at UCLA.

The elder Ball pulled his youngest son, LaMelo, out of Chino Hills High recently in favor of home schooling. DUKE AGAIN NO. 1 >> Duke (10-0) received all 65 first-place votes in the The Associated Press Top 25 poll released Monday after a pair of easy victories, its second straight week as the unanimous No. 1. The next three spots also remained the same from last week: Kansas, Michigan State and Villanova.

Notre Dame was No. 5 last week, but dropped to No. 9 following its 8163 loss to Michigan State.

Women

UCONN NO. 1, STANFORD FALLS TO NO. 18>> Stanford fell from No. 16 to 18th after losing to Baylor on Sunday while Cal dropped from 24th to 25th in the latest AP Top 25 poll. UConn passed its first major test of the season to stay No. 1.

The Huskies (7-0) trailed No. 3 Notre Dame by 11 points in the fourth quarter before rallying for an 80-71 victory on Sunday. UConn remained the unanimous top team from the 32-member national media panel.
