Amazon leases office space in North San Jose

SAN JOSE >> Amazon has extended a burst of Silicon Valley expansion by leasing an office building in North San Jose, according to people familiar with the deal.

Amazon has leased the entire 64,000-square-foot building at 2302 Trade Zone Blvd., said three people knowledgeable about the transaction.

A major renovation at the building was underway this week.

“I’m encouraged to see that even at the apparent end of this economic cycle, there is still strong interest in North San Jose as a destination for the tech industry,” San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo said Wednesday.

The building is just west of North Capitol Avenue and Interstate 680.

CBRE had a listing to seek tenants for the building.

Seattle-based Amazon didn’t respond to multiple requests for a comment about its Bay Area expansion, including the latest North San Jose deal.

The building’s owner, San Francisco-based D.R.

Stephens, also declined to discuss the matter.

Amazon, one of tech’s most famous brands, previously struck a deal in May to occupy two floors of an office tower in downtown San Jose. Amazon’s Lab126 research and development unit has moved into the building at 75 E. Santa Clara Street.

“The presence of Lab 126 in downtown San Jose is of particular interest to us for economic development goals,” Liccardo said. “We know Amazon has multiple locations for its warehouses and distribution centers. But the real question is: Where are the talented Amazon engineers and coders going to work?”

In October, Amazon agreed to occupy up to 228,000 square feet in Mountain View at The Village at San Antonio Center, a still-to-be-built mixed-use complex. That same month, Amazon agreed to sublease 165,000 square feet at 2795 Augustine Drive in Santa Clara.

But Amazon is far from the only big-name tech firm with growth efforts in San Jose.

Apple has bought and leased enough land and buildings to create an 85acre campus in North San Jose.

Samsung has moved into a big office complex on North First Street.

And in one of the most far-reaching growth efforts, Google intends to develop a transit-oriented village consisting of 6 million to 8 million square feet of offices that could accommodate 15,000 to 20,000 of the search giant’s employees.
