Toronto FC beats Seattle for MLS Cup

Jozy Altidore opened the scoring in the 67th minute and Toronto FC beat the Seattle Sounders 2-0 in Toronto on Saturday in the MLS Cup — becoming the first Canadian champion in league history.

Toronto avenged a penalty-shootout loss to Seattle last year in the title game.

Victor Vasquez made it 2-0 in injury time.

Seattle was seeking to become the fourth back-toback champ in MLS history.

ARMY EDGES NAVY >> Bennett Moehring narrowly missed a 48-yard fieldgoal try in a swirling snow on the final play and Army held off Navy 14-13 in Philadelph­ia to win its first Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy since 1996.

Army (9-3) earned its second straight win over Navy (6-6) following 14 straight losses in the series.

Army cut its deficit in the series to 60-51-7. The Knights claimed the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy thanks to an earlier win over Air Force.

SHARED LEAD AT QBE

SHOOTOUT >> Graeme McDowell and Shane Lowry shot an 8-under 64 in modified alternate shot to share the lead with Steve Stricker and Sean O’Hair going into the final round of the QBE Shootout in Naples, Fla.

The teams were tied at 18-under 126. SHARMA LEADS JOBURG >> India’s Shubhankar Sharma shot a 7-under 65 to open a five-stroke lead in the European Tour’s Joburg Open in Johannesbu­rg, South Africa.

Sharma was at 20-under 195. Christofer Blomstrand was second after a 62. Figure skating RUSSIAN WINS GRAND PRIX >> Alina Zagitova performed a near-flawless free skate to win the Grand Prix Final in Nagoya, Japan.

The 15-year-old world junior champion from Russia landed all seven of her jumps in the second half of her routine and made no major mistakes to finish with 223.30 points.

Zagitova’s compatriot, Maria Sotskova, finished second at 216.28. Kaetlyn Osmond of Canada, first after the short program, fell on her triple salchow and dropped to third with 215.16.

• Morgan Hill’s Anthony Ponomarenk­o and icedancing partner Christina Carriera capped a successful year by taking second in the Junior Grand Prix final.

The duo won two Junior Grand Prix competitio­ns this fall as well as getting a silver at the 2017 U.S. championsh­ips and a bronze at the ’17 junior World Championsh­ips.

The Americans, who train in Novi, Mich., scored 151.76 points to finish behind Russians Anastasia Skoptcova and Kirill Aleshin.

Olympics

WHITE 3RD IN SNOWBOARD

QUALIFYING >> Two-time American Olympic gold medalist Shaun White finished third in the opening Olympic qualifier on the halfpipe in Copper Mountain, Colo.

White scored 89.25 points on a clean run, but he still finished behind American Ben Ferguson and the winner, 2014 Olympic silver medalist Ayumu Hirano of Japan.

This was the first of five Olympic qualifiers. Boxing

AMERICAN TAKES BELT >> Britain’s James DeGale lost his IBF super middleweig­ht belt when he was beaten by American Caleb Truax in a majority decision at the Copper Box Arena in London. Truax improved to 293-2. DeGale (23-2-1) was making the fourth defense of the title he won in 2015.
