Tra Holder scored 29 points on 8-for-16 shooting, and No. 16 Arizona State upset No. 2 Kansas 95-85 at Allen Fieldhouse on Sunday to improve to 9-0.

Shannon Evans II had 22 points, and Remy Martin added 21 for the Sun Devils. Arizona State shot 50 percent from 3-point range and 50.8 percent overall to hand Kansas (7-2) its second straight loss. The Jayhawks fell to unranked Washington on Wednesday night.

Less than two minutes into the game the Sun Devils (9-0) found themselves down by as much as 13 before making their first field goal. Arizona State got back into it, though, trimming the deficit to just three points at halftime and eventually outscoring the Jayhawks 58-42 in the second half. To get over this initial hump, the Sun Devils had to take a breath and tune out the raucous environment.

“The game slowed down for us,” Holder said. “At first it was really rapid, the crowd got into it.”

For Kansas, the difference was defense — or the lack thereof.

“It wasn’t our offense,” coach Bill Self said. “Hey, if you score 85 at home, you’re supposed to win.” VILLANOVA 77, LA SALLE 68 >> Phil Booth and Donte DiVincenzo each scored 18 points to help the No. 4 Wildcats avoid an upset and remain undefeated.

The Wildcats (10-0) were sloppy, struggled from 3-point range and could not shake the pesky Explorers (5-6) until the final minutes of the game to win their 21st straight Big 5 game. GONZAGA 97, WASHINGTON 70>> Johnathan Williams had 23 points and 12 rebounds, Zach Norvell Jr. added 21 points and the No. 12 Bulldogs (8-2) rebounded nicely from a loss to Villanova and never allowed the Huskies to entertain the idea of a second Top 25 upset in one week. Gonzaga led by 19 in the first half and never let the Huskies put together a sustained run in the second half.

The sellout crowd at Hec Edmundson Pavilion was intrigued by Washington’s development under new coach Mike Hopkins after the Huskies (7-3) upset then-No. 2 Kansas last week on the road. But it was a split crowd and those in Gonzaga colors had plenty to cheer in the second half as the Bulldogs dissected Washington’s zone defense.

Women

CAL 92, PACIFIC 85 >> Kristine Anigwe scored 28 points and hauled in 18 rebounds to help the No. 25 Bears hold on at Pacific.

Penina Davidson had her third double-double of the season, a career-high 22 points to go with 10 rebounds, Mikayla Cowling added 15 points and Kianna Smith had 12 for Cal (7-2), which shot 52 percent from

the field to get its fourth straight win.

GeAnna Luaulu-Summers finished with 18 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists to lead five Pacific players in double figures. OREGON STATE 110, SAN JOSE STATE 62 >> Myzhanique Ladd equaled a career-high with 19 points,

but the cold-shooting Spartans fell behind early and never caught up at the No. 19 Beavers, who broke the 100-point barier for the first time since 2015.

San Jose State (2-7) was held to 29-percent shooting (22-75). Taylor Turney added 16 for the Spartans. SANTA CLARA 104, MENLO 61 >> Five players scored in double-figures to lead the Broncos in their final non-conference home game.

SCU (3-5) dominated from the opening tip, scoring the first 20 points of the game while the Oaks (9-1) missed their first 12 shots and finished the day just 29.6-percent from the field.

The Broncos’ Ashlyn Herlihy led all players with 25 points and 14 rebounds. Destinee Bowie led the Oaks with 19 points. TENNESSEE 82, TEXAS 75 >> Jaime Nared and Mercedes Russell both produced double-doubles as the No. 11 Lady Volts outlasted No. 2 Texas in a physical matchup of unbeaten teams.

“If that was the No. 2 team in the country, where do we stand now?” Russell asked after the game. “8275. There’s your answer right there.”

Texas (7-1) is the highestranked team Tennessee has defeated in Holly Warlick’s six seasons as coach.

Nared collected 23 points and 13 rebounds as Tennessee never trailed.
