Quakes may get Swedish striker

Eriksson had 14 goals for Sweden’s top division

The Earthquakes might be on the verge of reshaping their attacking front.

Talks to bring Swedish striker Magnus Eriksson to San Jose appear to have become serious, according to the newspaper Expressen.

The Swedish publication reported Eriksson’s Stockholm club received a request from a Major League Soccer team just as the Quakes left Costa Rican international Marco Urena off the protected list for the expansion draft that takes place Tuesday.

Djurgarden IF sports manager Bosse Andersson confirmed the request but declined to identify the team. Expressen previously reported it was the Earthquakes, who have hired Mikael Stahre of Sweden as the new coach.

Eriksson, 27, led Sweden’s top division in scoring this past season with 14 goals.

“What I can say is that we have received a request regarding Magnus Eriksson from a club in the U.S. and MLS,” Andersson told the paper. “Then we’ll see what it’s all about.”

Urena had five goals and three assists in his first MLS season this past year. He also led Costa Rica to the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

But he was not among the 11 players the Quakes protected for the expansion draft involving Los Angeles FC.

San Jose officials could not immediately be reached for comment. The team does not publicly address player signings until they are officially approved by MLS.
