Reid scores 29, Stanford stays on roll, downs USF

Travis Reid matched his career-high with 29 points in helping host Stanford win its third in four games, beating USF 71-59 on Sunday.

Reid’s first basket of the second half, a layup 33 seconds in, gave him 1,000 points for his career. Josh Sharma added 13 points for the Cardinal and Michael Humphrey had nine points and nine rebounds.

Chase Foster and Souley Boum each scored 14 points for the Dons (6-4), who had a three-game winning streak snapped.

The Dons had a one-point lead with 8:23 remaining in the first half before the Cardinal slowly began to pull away.

Stanford (6-6) opened the second half with an 11-3 run and a 25-point advantage. San Francisco made one of its first 11 shots of the second half.

The Dons shaved 14 points off their deficit thanks to an 11-0 run that brought them within 51-40 with 7:37 remaining to play. They didn’t get any closer.

The Dons suffered through their worst shooting half of the season, scoring 21 points on 5-of-26 (19.2 percent) in the first half. They missed their last nine shots of the half.

Stanford outscored San Francisco 12-1 over the final 5:04 to take a 38-21 lead into halftime.

The Cardinal is in a stretch of eight games all played in California. It last played outside the state on Nov. 26 in Portland. Stanford next plays out of state on Jan. 11 at Washington State.

Stanford remains without starters Marcus Sheffield and Dorian Pickens, both out with foot injuries. The Cardinal meets Kansas in Sacramento on Thursday. SOUTH DAKOTA 76, SAN JOSE STATE 62 >> Tyler Hagedorn scored 19 of his careerhigh 27 points in the second half and Matt Mooney finished with 18 points to help the Coyotes (11-3) pull away in the second half for a win over the host Spartans (2-8).

Brandon Mitchell scored 17 on 6-of-6 shooting for San Jose State. Ryan Welage added 13 points and Keith Fisher 10 for the Spartans, who have lost five in a row. ARIZONA STATE 76, VANDERBILT 64 >> Tra Holder scored 25 points, Shannon Evans II added 15 and the No. 5 Sun Devils (100) overcame a dismal start to beat visiting Vanderbilt (3-7). Arizona State was coming off a victory last week over then-No. 2 Kansas that sent the Sun Devils to their highest ranking in 36 years.

Sharp at both ends, Arizona State used a 26-3 run spanning halftime to turn what started out as an embarrassi­ng performanc­e into a runaway that had Wells Fargo Arena the loudest it’s been all season.

NORTH CAROLINA 78, TENNESSEE 73 >> Brandon Williams made a 3-pointer to put the No. 7 Tar Heels (10-1) ahead for good with 35 seconds left against the No. 20 Volunteers (7-2).

North Carolina capitalize­d on a 9-0 run in the final minute to win for the fifth straight time and ended Thompson-Boling Arena’s hex on defending national champions.

Tennessee had won each of the last five times it had hosted a defending national champion, a string that included victories over Connecticu­t (in January 2012), Florida (February 2007 and February 2008) and Kentucky (February 1999 and February 2013).

Joel Berry II scored a game-high 21 points for North Carolina.

BAYLOR 118, SAVANNAH STATE 86 >> Jo-Lual Acuil had career highs with 31 points and 20 rebounds and the No. 21 Bears (9-2) had a 21-0 first-half run to rout Savannah State (3-10).

SAINT MARY’S 69, UT MARTIN 58 >> The Gaels (6-3) outscored the Skyhawks 37-24 after halftime, including holding them to just nine third-quarter points, in opening play at the Basketball Travelers Inc. Invitation­al at Purdue University’s Mackey Arena. Megan McKay scored nine of her game-high 19 points in the third quarter, helping the Gaels overcome a 34-32 halftime deficit

NEBRASKA 81, SAN JOSE STATE 55 >> Fieme’a Hafoka had 12 points and four assists, both career highs, but the Spartans (28) fell to the Cornhusker­s in the Event Center.

SJSU’s Myzhanique Ladd also had 12 points and added five rebounds, had an assist and a steal. Cydni Lewis had a career-high 10 rebounds with nine points. NOTRE DAME 91, DEPAUL 82 >> Jessica Shepard scored a career-high 39 points and the No. 2 Irish 10-1) withstood the Blue Demons (7-4) 3-point spree. LOUISVILLE 87, KENTUCKY 63 >> Asia Durr scored 32 points, Myisha Hines-Allen added 18 and No. 3 Louisville (13-0) outscored Kentucky (8-4) 24-9 in the second quarter in the annual Bluegrass rivalry showdown.

SOUTH CAROLINA 99, SAVANNAH STATE 38 >> A’ja Wilson scored 26 points and the No. 4 Gamecocks (10-1), who began the game with just nine players and then lost another, beat Savannah State (2-7).
