SAN JOSE >> The Earthquakes traded former all-star goalkeeper David Bingham to the rival Los Angeles Galaxy for as much as $250,000 in allocation money, the team announced Monday.

The trade was not surprising after the team and former Cal star failed to agree on terms of a new contract during negotiations this past season. Bingham, a 2016 Major League Soccer all-star, lost his starting position to Andrew Tarbell over the summer.

It also wasn’t a surprise for the Castro Valley native to land in Los Angeles, where coach Dominic Kinnear is an assistant after the Quakes fired him in June.

San Jose will receive $100,000 in general allocation money and $100,000 in targeted allocation money from the Galaxy in 2018. The Quakes also could receive $50,000 in 2019 based on Bingham’s performance next year. MLS has created different funding definitions as part of its salary and salary cap structure. General and targeted allocation funds are designated for specific spending purposes.

Bingham, 28, started 95 games after the Quakes earned the rights to sign him in 2011 by winning a weighted lottery. He served as Jon Busch’s backup until Kinnear took over in 2015 and inserted him as the starter. Bingham had a 34-35-27 record, with 27 shutouts and a 1.24 goalsagainst average.
