We got the beat!

“Head Over Heels,” the new musical featuring the totally awesome 1980s anthems of the seminal punk/ new wave band the Go-Go’s, will have its Broadway tryout at San Francisco’s Curran Theatre next spring, producers have announced.

In a boon to retro fans eager to bask in kitschy nostalgia for the days of leg warmers and wine coolers, the show will run April 24 through May 20, with the musical slated to head to Broadway in the 2018-2019 season. Tony winner Michael Mayer (“Spring Awakening,” “American Idiot”) will direct, Gwyneth Paltrow is a producer, and James Magruder has adapted the book by Jeff Whitty (“Avenue Q”), which is drawn from Sir Philip Sidney’s Elizabethan-era romantic novel “Arcadia.”

The score will feature many of the hits associated with the iconic girl group such as “Vacation,” “Heaven Is a Place on Earth,” “Mad About You” and, of course, “We Got the Beat.” If you grew up in the age of greed, this is your “Jersey Boys.”

“The Curran has a wonderful history of introducing shows to the world before they go on to Broadway,” theater impresario Carole Shorenstein Hays said in a release. “I’m very happy to continue that legacy, giving California audiences the chance to be among the first to experience the utter joy of the Go-Go’s ‘Head Over Heels,’ filled with the music that only the world’s most successful all-female rock band could provide.”

“Head Over Heels” is the latest in a series of Broadway tryouts held in the Bay Area including the recent musicals “Ain’t Too Proud” and “Monsoon Wedding” and blockbusters such as “Wicked,” “American Idiot” and “Mamma Mia!” www.sfcurran.com.

So far, producers’ lips are sealed on ticket information. Expect news on that front in the near future.
