SAN JOSE >> Police are investigating the death of a 17-year-old boy who was found stabbed to death overnight Thursday, San Jose’s second homicide in as many nights.

San Jose police got a call Thursday at 11:58 p.m. reporting a stabbing in the 200 block of Sunset Avenue near San Antonio Street, Sgt. Enrique Garcia said. The boy was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later, Garcia said.

The boy’s identity will be publicly released by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office once his family is notified.

The East Side Union High School District confirmed that the victim was a senior at Pegasus High School, and attended Independence High School for the previous three years.

“This is the tragic loss of a promising young adult,” Superintendent Chris Funk said. “Our hearts go out to his family and friends.”

Funk added that support and counseling staff will be available for students at both schools when class resumes Jan. 8.

The motive or circumstances surrounding the stabbing are under investigation, Garcia said, and no suspects have been arrested or identified.

The homicide is the 34th of the year in San Jose. There were 47 at the same time last year.

The homicide comes on the heels of a shooting Wednesday night of a man about a mile away on the 2500 block of Van Winkle Lane, near the Aptitud Community Academy at Goss.

Anyone with information about the killing can contact San Jose police homicide Detective Sgt. Mike Montonye or Detective Wayne Smith at 408-277-5283 or leave a tip with Silicon Valley Crime Stoppers at 408-947-STOP or at svcrimestoppers.org. Tipsters may be eligible for a cash reward.
